athenahealth Volunteers Contribute More than 1,300 Hours to 52 Nonprofit Organizations During the Company’s Annual ‘September is for Service’ Program

Through the month-long campaign, athenahealth donated $100,000 to help fight food insecurity

WATERTOWN, Mass.--()--athenahealth, Inc., a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, recently completed its annual “September is for Service” program, a month-long event that contributed more than 1,300 volunteer hours to partner nonprofits in addition to $100,000 toward organizations helping to fight food insecurity.

The program, sponsored by athenaGives, athenahealth’s corporate social responsibility program, supports organizations that align with its mission to provide equitable access to healthcare for all; improve food security; and support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Throughout the month of September, the annual program supported 52 organizations in the United States and India.

This year’s “September is for Service” program focused on improving food security. Volunteers prepared student meals at Akshaya Patra’s kitchens in Bengaluru, India; packaged foods at Atlanta Community Food Bank in Atlanta, Georgia; and participated in a fall cleanup at Belfast Soup Kitchen in Belfast, Maine; among several other events. Additionally, volunteers worked with The Smile Foundation in Chennai, India, to support its mobile hospital program, which serves underprivileged children and women; and in the United States, athenahealth partnered with MedShare to assemble 2,000 clean birthing kits, designed to create a safe, hygienic birth for people around the world who do not have access to quality childbirth health services.

“We are grateful to partner with and support nonprofit organizations that make such a powerful impact within their communities every day,” said Gillian Perron, who leads athenaGives at athenahealth. “The athenaGives ‘September is for Service’ program was an incredible success, with overwhelming participation from our employees across communities in the United States and India, and we are excited to continue our partnerships throughout the year.”

The athenaGives “September is for Service” program also included numerous events with India STEM Foundation in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune, India, supporting students studying STEM in labs.
