SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced plans to hold Upgrade 2021, the NTT Research Summit, as a virtual and in-person event on September 20-21. This year’s summit, organized under the theme “Spark Curiosity,” opens on September 20 at 12:00 pm (PDT). Day 1 of the summit features three demos, one panel discussion and three talks. The lineup on Day 2 includes 24 half-hour talks focusing on areas related to ongoing work at the organization’s Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab, Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab and Medical & Health Informatics (MEI) Lab. The in-person event will take place at the new NTT Group office in Sunnyvale, CA.
Following a welcome address by NTT Research CEO Kazuhiro Gomi, the first session on Day 1 will consist of a video demonstration and discussion by MEI Lab Senior Scientist, Dr. Jon Peterson, on what the cardiovascular bio digital twin could look like within a decade. The second session, led by PHI Lab Senior Research Scientist Dr. Satoshi Kako, will illustrate the problem-solving potential of a silicon-based coherent Ising machine (CIM) and explain why this approach, while still several years away from implementation, is an optimal path for solving combinatorial optimization problems by applying quantum physics. In the third exhibit on Day 1, NTT Research Vice President of Strategy, Dr. Kei Karasawa, will demonstrate the interface to a product based on attribute-based encryption (ABE), a policy-oriented type of encryption. The Day 1 schedule also includes panel discussions and presentations on blockchain, NTT Smart Cities and the Innovative Optical Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative. A cocktail hour will follow the Day 1 sessions for those attending in-person.
The sessions on Day 2 (September 21), begin at 9:30 am (PDT). Organized in three Lab-driven simultaneous tracks, the schedule consists of eight 30-minute time slots (with a one-hour break) for a total of 24 talks. The institutions represented by this year’s speakers, along with dual affiliations for NTT Research scientists, include Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Harvard University, The Institute for Systems Biology, Johns Hopkins University, Kyushu University, PVLoops (creator of the Harvi app), Stanford University, Technical University of Munich, University of California Berkeley, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, University of Tokyo and University of Washington. A sampling of the titles of this year’s talks, separated by track, includes the following:
- CIS Lab – “The Mathematics Behind Program Obfuscation,” “Recent Developments in Cryptography,” “Break the Lattice Barrier for the Hidden Number Problem” and “Dynamic User Competition in the Bitcoin Market”
- MEI Lab – “Transformable 3D Neuroelectronic Interfaces,” “Bio Digital Twins in Health and Disease” and “Finding the needles in the haystack: Utilizing a Causal Framework to Reduce the Hypothesis Space and Relate the Genome to Phenome”
- PHI Lab – “A Fast, Scalable and Reconfigurable Simulation Platform for the Coherent Ising Machine,” “Computing with Physical Systems” and “Physics-Aware Training for Deep Physical Neural Networks: From Digital Twins to Physics-based Deep Learning,”
The event ends on September 21 with a 3:00 pm Networking and Poster Social for each of the three Labs. NTT Research invites students, academics, industry researchers and the interested public to attend. About NTT Research
NTT Research opened its offices in July 2019 as a new Silicon Valley startup to conduct basic research and advance technologies that promote positive change for humankind. Currently, three labs are housed at NTT Research facilities in Sunnyvale: the Physics and Informatics (PHI) Lab, the Cryptography and Information Security (CIS) Lab, and the Medical and Health Informatics (MEI) Lab. The organization aims to upgrade reality in three areas: 1) quantum information, neuroscience and photonics; 2) cryptographic and information security; and 3) medical and health informatics. NTT Research is part of NTT, a global technology and business solutions provider with an annual R&D budget of $3.6 billion.
