POM ACO Works with CCGroup to Identify Pattern Variations in Treating Medicare Shared Savings Program Beneficiaries

SAN MATEO, Calif.--()--The Physician Organization of Michigan ACO, LLC (POM ACO) is working with Cave Consulting Group, Inc. (CCGroup) as part of POM ACO’s efforts to provide better health at lower overall healthcare costs for approximately 100,000 Michigan Medicare beneficiaries with traditional Medicare coverage. POM ACO entered into a Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to better manage these Medicare beneficiaries, focusing on higher quality, more coordinated, and less variable care.

We selected to work with CCGroup for several reasons,” stated Dr. Timothy A. Peterson, Executive at PMO ACO. “Primarily, we believe CCGroup will allow us to identify key areas of unwarranted practice variation across our provider population,” continued Dr. Peterson. “This capability will assist POM ACO in its efforts to reduce costs and improve quality of care.”

Dr. Douglas G. Cave, President of CCGroup, mentioned, “A foundation for successful value-based care programs, such as POM ACO’s MSSP, is MedMarkers™ and Clinical MedMarker Protocol Ranges™. MedMarkers™ are process of care quality measures, well-defined in clinical guidelines. However, MedMarkers™ are also the key services and procedures most associated with cost-of-care in treating a medical condition. Clinical MedMarker Protocol Ranges™ are achievable and clinically appropriate ranges of clinical practice for a MedMarker™. These ranges are developed by presenting the CCGroup National Comparative MedMarker Database™ results to the CCGroup National Specialist Panels.”

POM is comprised of 10 provider organizations covering 22 Michigan counties,” defined Dr. Peterson. “For more prevalent medical conditions, we want to examine specialist MedMarker™ practice variations across our participating provider organizations. In this manner, POM can focus its efforts to reduce these variations and lower overall healthcare costs, while increasing quality of patient care. As an example, coronary artery disease (CAD) can be prevalent in some covered Medicare beneficiaries. We want to see the various provider organization MedMarker™ rates of left heart catheterization to further diagnose or treat heart problems in patients with CAD.”
