Humana Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for Eleventh Consecutive Year

Humana recognized as a leading sustainability-driven company, committed to being an outstanding corporate citizen in the communities it serves

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--()--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that it has been selected for inclusion on the Dow Jones Sustainability World & North America Indices (DJSI) for the eleventh consecutive year. Humana is one of only six U.S. “Health Care Equipment & Services” companies chosen for the 2017 DJSI World Index.

S & P Dow Jones Indices (DJI) and RobecoSAM, an investment specialist focused exclusively on sustainability investing, track “the leading sustainability-driven companies based on an analysis of financially material environmental, social and governance factors, and DJI’s robust index methodology.” The DSJI World Index represents the top 10 percent of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria.

“Humana’s associates are dedicated to helping each other, our health plan members, and the communities we serve improve their health and well-being. This is how we thrive together in our work to be an outstanding corporate citizen in communities across the U.S.,” said Bruce Broussard, Humana’s President and CEO. “We’re committed to running a sustainable business, built for long-term success. By living our values every day, we are inspiring health and helping people achieve lifelong well-being.”

The annual DJSI report represents “the gold standard for corporate sustainability.” Each year, Dow Jones and partner RobecoSAM assess the world’s largest companies via RobecoSAM’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment, which uses a consistent, rules-based methodology to convert an average of 600 data points per company into one overall score. The score determines inclusion in the DJSI.

Humana demonstrates its commitment to sustainable business practices in many ways. One example is the company’s “Bold Goal” to improve the health of the communities Humana serves 20 percent by 2020 by making it easy for people to achieve their best health. Humana shared its latest Bold Goal results in a report earlier this year, and in its recent 2017 Humana Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Progress Report.

As a result of its ongoing corporate citizenship efforts, Humana has received recognition from several other notable, third- party organizations in 2017 – in addition to the DJSI – including:

  • Earning a 100 percent score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality index in 2017
  • Ranking No. 3 on the list of the “Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America,” compiled by Healthiest Employers, to honor companies that proactively contribute to the health of employees through the most effective and innovative cultures of well-being.
  • Earning a ranking of No. 40 on CR Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens list in 2017
  • Ranking among the Top 50 companies on Military Times’ “Best for Vets: Employers” list in 2017
