GE Transportation’s Most Technologically Advanced Locomotive on Track With 10,000th Order

CHICAGO--()--GE Transportation laid the groundwork for a cleaner, more efficient future by introducing the Evolution Series locomotives, which provide measurably higher reliability and lower life-cycle costs than previous GE models. More than a decade since launch, GE reached a critical milestone – it’s 10,000th Evolution Series locomotive order, making it the company’s most successful line to date.

“From Iowa to India, and Angola to the Australian Outback, our Evolution Series locomotives combine incredible power, performance and efficiency to operate in the most difficult conditions,” said Jamie Miller, President and CEO of GE Transportation. “The 10,000th order milestone is a testament to how well these locomotives perform in the field and meet the needs of the industry.”

The latest Evolution Series Tier 4 engine stands out for its industry-first technology advancements that minimize emissions without costly after-treatment. This technology enables a 70 percent reduction in emissions, which is achieved by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine through a next generation cooling system. This allows railroads to gain significant savings through reduced infrastructural and operational costs, as well as to comply with the most stringent emission requirements.

The Evolution Series features advanced digital capabilities that provide operators with real-time insights to improve performance. Each Tier 4 locomotive is loaded with over 200 sensors that process over one billion instructions per second.

The data is analyzed in real-time at GE Transportation’s Global Performance Optimization Centers (GPOC), which use advanced diagnostics and algorithms to provide customers with tailored maintenance prescriptions. The system automatically analyzes data on over 15 terabytes of operational history, and the outputs are constantly reviewed and improved upon by a team of technical specialists and domain experts with hundreds of years of combined experience.

“In today’s environment, rail operators face unprecedented change, a deep need for operating efficiency and increased demand,” added Miller. “The Evolution Series combats these challenges with real-time, data-driven insights that enable customers to streamline operations and generate unsurpassed levels of efficiency.”
