FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MEDNAX, Inc., the national health solutions partner specializing in anesthesiology, neonatology, maternal-fetal medicine, other pediatric services, radiology, and management services, is pleased to announce that its innovative mobile Simulation Program has earned provisional accreditation through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and has expanded its service offering to include training at non-affiliated facilities across the country who do not have the technology available.
Launched in 2016 as an important facet of the Company’s comprehensive patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, the MEDNAX Simulation Program has grown rapidly to offer inter-professional in-situ simulation customized to meet the needs of its neonatology, anesthesiology and OB hospitalist service lines, and will soon offer training to additional subspecialties. It is unique in that it is completely mobile and performed on-site in a true clinical environment, allowing for more realistic training and enhanced response to acute situations.
“Our program is truly groundbreaking in that we step away from the sterile environment of a simulation lab and get back into the trenches of where the actual work is done,” said Gary Smith, RN, BSN, Director of Simulation, MEDNAX. “We utilize the hospital’s equipment in their environment, which the staff are most comfortable with, together with our state-of-the-art training tools to create lifelike scenarios that build confidence and competence, enhance communication and teamwork, and help identify team leadership all for the goal of enhanced patient safety.”
Simulation programs deployed nationwide have demonstrated improved patient outcomes, lower incidence of adverse events, enhanced safety performance and an innovative way to comply with mandated professional practice evaluations. The MEDNAX program is designed to offer an interactive learning experience and function as an adjunct to other existing safety initiatives. Being one of the only fully mobile simulation programs nationally, it has a broad geographic reach that allows the Company to easily deploy its innovative training in a variety of clinical settings.
“The MEDNAX Simulation Program has been a very effective, valuable team building exercise that has helped participants develop a better understanding, build trust and improve communication with one another,” said Dr. Sean Coy, MEDNAX-affiliated anesthesiologist at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. “Simulation training is the future of practical medical education as it hones the skills that truly matter. MEDNAX has led the way in supporting a dedicated, professional simulation team and the hospitals we serve appreciate that commitment.”
To complement the program’s provisional accreditation, the team has also attained Health Simulation Educator (CHSE), Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) and Distinguished CHEST Educator certifications. These combined achievements place the MEDNAX program in a select group of global simulation programs. Of the 87 other accredited simulation programs in the U.S. and more than 100 programs worldwide, few offer an accredited program with fully certified staff.
“We are extremely proud of the SSH designation and the additional certifications our team has achieved in efforts to provide a simulation program of the utmost quality, and we look forward to bringing this valuable training technology to hospitals and practices nationwide,” said Smith.
