FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--International Data Corporation (IDC) has just released an IDC Innovators report recognizing five innovative hands-free augmented reality (AR) head mounted display (HMD) vendors with revenue under $100 million.
The five vendors named as IDC Innovators are DAQRI, Meta, ODG, Optinvent, and Vuzix.
DAQRI's Smart Helmet is a standalone unit with a large display, plenty of computing power, and swappable batteries. Meta offers a developer kit (known as Meta 2) that provides an affordable and highly-rated tethered platform that competes with the largest AR HMD vendors. ODG has been a longtime player in the head-mounted space, and continues to perfect its easy-to-wear smart glass products. Optinvent's head-mounted displays cater to specific industry verticals for greater hands-free productivity, such as manufacturing and logistics. Vuzix has a long history in the head-mounted display space, with 49 patents issued and another 41 patents pending for its smart glass technology.
"The concept of hands-free augmented reality head-mounted displays has been around for quite some time, but the technologies necessary to bring such devices to a broader enterprise market have only coalesced in the past few years," said Tom Mainelli, IDC program vice president, devices and AR/VR. "These five innovative vendors are well positioned to succeed as competition begins to heat up and larger companies such as Microsoft, Epson, Intel, and others begin to focus an increasing amount of attention on the space," he added.
The new report, IDC Innovators: Augmented Reality Head-Mounted Displays for Commercial Use, 2017 (US42771517) profiles AR HMDs with an innovative technology or a groundbreaking new business model or both. The IDC Innovators research document examines smart parking companies with revenue of less than $100 million with a product, service, or business model with a specific use case.
About IDC Innovators
IDC Innovators reports present a set of vendors – under $100M in revenue at time of selection – chosen by an IDC analyst within a specific market that offer an innovative new technology, a groundbreaking approach to an existing issue, and/or an interesting new business model. Vendors in the process of being acquired by a larger company may be included in the report provided the acquisition is not finalized at the time of publication of the report. Vendors funded by venture capital firms may also be included in the report even if the venture capital firm has a financial stake in the vendor's company.
