Chevron Phillips Chemical started construction of a $6 billion U.S. Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project in summer 2014. The project consists of a 1.5 million metric tons/year (3.3 billion pounds/year) ethane cracker and two world-scale polyethylene units that will each produce 500,000 metric tons of plastic resin every year. Our U.S. Gulf Coast project will create 400 long-term permanent jobs as well as 10,000 construction and engineering jobs. The project is expected to be completed in 2017.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas--()--Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) has launched Emerging Possibilities, a new online site for stories and updates about its $6 billion investment in the U.S. Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project, which is expected to be completed in phases through the end of the year.

Throughout 2017 and beyond, Chevron Phillips Chemical will share compelling stories about the people behind the herculean effort and the products that will be manufactured and used to enhance the quality of life for people across the globe.

“This website will provide a sneak peek into the process of bringing a megaproject like this online, showcasing the incredible talent behind the project and how our products impact everyday living,” said Peter Cella, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Phillips Chemical. “While this project is being built in Texas, the economic impact is felt across the country, specifically with our suppliers and vendors, on the rails and in the ports, as we plan for greater exports of polyethylene.”

The company is building an ethane cracker at its Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown, Texas, to produce ethylene and two polyethylene units in Old Ocean, adjacent to its Sweeny, Texas, facility. The project alone has added 400 permanent jobs and generated 10,000 engineering and construction jobs.

Ethylene is used to make polyethylene, a versatile and efficient plastic ideal for a multitude of applications, including food packaging and industrial pipe.

Initial stories on the new site include:

  • Plant operations – a day in the life of a process operator;
  • Behind-the-curtain look at the new Cedar Bayou control room;
  • Ground flares – exciting drone footage and photos of low-profile flaring systems;
  • Features on the importance of films and packaging to eliminate food waste around the world.
