New Study Finds Cost of Healthcare is Top Cause of Stress for Moms

One in five moms attribute the cost of healthcare as major cause of anxiety

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Leading on-demand video medicine provider Doctor On Demand today released a report that helps uncover the underlying causes of stress and anxiety facing mothers. In support of Mental Health Awareness Month and their commitment to helping patients live life well year-round, Doctor On Demand’s report “Moms, Money, and Mental Health” sheds light on the key health issues affecting moms and the barriers preventing them from seeking help.

The “Moms, Money, and Mental Health” report was prepared from a third party, independent survey of over 1,000 moms nationwide and found that a majority of moms are suffering from anxiety and stress due to a number of internally- and externally-driven factors. Current country-wide issues - from healthcare, to politics, to the U.S. education system - are taking their toll on Americans’ well-being. In fact, the study found that the rising cost of mental health appointments hinders one in five moms from getting the help they need for stress and anxiety related issues.

In addition to country-wide issues, the study found that moms are experiencing stress and anxiety in their everyday lives and not addressing them.

  • 1 in 3 moms cite family finances as a major contributor to ongoing stress and anxiety.
  • 1 in 3 moms admit to lying to their doctors about things like their stress and anxiety levels.
  • 63% of moms feel guilty making time for their own personal health.
  • 75% of moms are unable to devote more than 1 hour a day to “me time” (time away from their job, kids, responsibilities, etc.).
  • 1 in 4 moms noted that suffering from stress and anxiety impacts their ability to parent to the best they can.
  • Nearly half of moms admitted to feeling anxious or jealous seeing other mom’s lives on social media. Comparing monetary status, parenting, and overall happiness were among the main triggers.

“The findings are a good reminder for moms and their families to recognize the importance of addressing stress and anxiety and managing both in healthy ways,” said Dr. Ian Tong, Chief Medical Officer at Doctor On Demand. “When stress and anxiety go untreated, it can lead to other downstream issues that are sometimes more serious like lack of focus and productivity at work, burnout, and marital and parenting issues.”

It’s clear moms are busy and feel guilty taking the time to prioritize their own health. Doctor On Demand makes it easy for moms to access the cost-effective care and support they need for the full mind and body. Doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists are available through live video visits as trusted partners.

While the report uncovers top issues impacting mental health for all moms, health is a universal concern. This Women’s Health Week, Doctor On Demand is offering $25 off any medical or mental health visits with code HEALTH25. Offer expires at midnight on Sunday May 21, 2017.
