Asbury Taps Residents to Help Redefine the Expectations of Aging

Retirement Communities Celebrate Older Americans Month with a System-Wide Social Campaign That Demonstrates What’s Age Got To Do With It?

GERMANTOWN, Md.--()--Asbury Communities, a system of premier continuing care retirement communities and life-enriching home care services for older adults, announced the launch of its nationwide social campaign, What’s Age Got To Do With It?, that brings to life the organization’s vision of continually redefining the expectations of aging. The campaign coincides with our nation’s celebration of Older Americans Month that aims to elevate the conversations about aging today.

“At Asbury, we want to change the way society views aging, retirement communities, and the people who choose to live in them,” said Doug Leidig, President and CEO of Asbury Communities. “Our campaign is designed to help drive an important conversation – that although our physical abilities may change, aging doesn't mean we stop being ourselves. We continue as before, enriched by our experiences. Because, really, what’s age got to do with it?”

Through May and June, Asbury is sharing authentic photos and videos on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter that spotlight dozens of residents ages 65 to 97 who continue to pursue and cultivate their passions, hobbies, and occupations far beyond what society expects of older adults. The campaign personifies the Older Americans Month theme of Age Out Loud, and relevant hashtags will be used to share and reinforce the message, including #ActYourAge, #AsburyAging, #WhatsAgeGotToDoWithIt, #AgeOutLoud, and #DisruptAging.

“While misconceptions and stereotypes continue to exist about seniors’ capabilities and passions, Asbury is celebrating the very real and very important contributions older adults continue to make in society,” said Leidig.

Campaign participants reside in retirement communities across the Asbury system, including Asbury Methodist Village, Asbury Solomons, Bethany Village, Inverness Village, and Springhill.

Asbury kicked off its campaign with a Q&A with the Next Avenue 2017 Aging Influencer of the Year, author and TED Conference presenter Ashton Applewhite whose mission is to raise awareness of and end ageism in our society.
