Dextera Surgical and B. Braun Surgical S.A. Hold Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) Symposium for Leading Thoracic Surgeons in Spain

-- Hands-On Training for All Surgeons on Use of MicroCutter 5/80 Stapler and Complementary Devices --

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--()--Dextera Surgical Inc. (Nasdaq:DXTR), manufacturer of the smallest-profile and most maneuverable articulating surgical stapling platform on the market for minimally invasive surgery, and B. Braun Surgical S.A., the distribution arm of the B. Braun Aesculap Group, today announced the completion of a video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) symposium detailing the use and benefits of the MicroCutter 5/80 Stapler with complementary VATS instrumentation from B. Braun Surgical S.A. for surgeons in Spain.

“This symposium provided an excellent opportunity for surgeons to learn video-assisted thoracic surgery techniques with the latest offerings in cutting-edge technology,” commented Raul Embun, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of surgery at the Universitario Miguel Servet in Zaragoza, Spain. “Following a productive and engaging session, the surgeons are excited to take the new learnings back to their hospitals and to consider how these new devices may enable less invasive approaches to thoracic surgery.”

Held in Tuttlingen, Germany, at the headquarters of B Braun/Aesculap, 48 surgeons from 24 institutions performing video-assisted thoracic surgery in Spain attended. The symposium included a lecture from Shanda Blackmon, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of thoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, on segmentectomy and other complicated VATS techniques, which highlighted the use of the MicroCutter 5/80 to help enable these procedures. William Walker, F.R.C.S., surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, presented the posterior approach for VATS lobectomy, also using the MicroCutter 5/80 to help enable the procedure. Dr. Embun presented information on VATS lobectomy, highlighting the first cases using the MicroCutter 5/80 in Spain. Following the demonstrations, all attending surgeons participated in a hands-on simulated lobectomy using Dextera Surgical’s MicroCutter 5/80 as well as B. Braun’s EinsteinVision® 3D camera system and the Caiman® Advanced Bipolar Seal and Cut Technology.

“We are extremely pleased to partner with B. Braun Surgical S.A. to bring the MicroCutter 5/80 to surgeons in Spain,” said Julian Nikolchev, president and CEO of Dextera Surgical. “This symposium, with surgeons from nearly half of all VATS centers in Spain, is a key step in educating surgeons on the benefits of our surgical stapler in Spain and demonstrates the strong fit of the MicroCutter technology with B. Braun’s capabilities and surgical instrument offerings. We were excited to see the positive reaction from the surgeons and their interest in evaluating the MicroCutter 5/80 in Spain.”

In October 2016, Dextera Surgical entered into a marketing and distribution agreement with B. Braun Surgical S.A. whereby B. Braun Surgical S.A. will sell the MicroCutter 5/80 in Spain. B. Braun Surgical S.A. has an extensive network of direct and indirect sales representatives in Spain who focus on surgeons performing minimally invasive surgical procedures.
