MaxLinear DVB-T Receiver Selected by Fetch TV for New Hybrid Set-Top Boxes

  • MxL101SF Enables Free-to-Air and Multi-Channel Recording Functionality

AMSTERDAM--()--RAI Amsterdam, IBC Exhibition – MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for cable and satellite broadband communications, the connected home, data center, metro, long-haul fiber networks, and wireless infrastructure, today announced its MxL101SF DVB-T tuner has been selected by Fetch TV for its recently launched high-definition and ultra-high-definition set-top boxes (STBs).

The MaxLinear MxL101SF was selected for the Fetch TV “Mini” and “Mighty” hybrid receivers, two recently launched set-top boxes (STBs) that deliver free-to-air, over-the-top (OTT) and subscription content to consumers throughout Australia.

The Fetch TV Mighty is a Wi-Fi connected STB with 1 terabyte of storage that can simultaneously record up to six channels of digital television from three different networks. The Mighty also supports the HEVC video codec for efficient streaming of 4K HDTV services. The Fetch TV Mini is a single-tuner, high-definition STB with the same wireless capability to receive terrestrial television and subscription content, but without storage.

The MaxLinear MxL101SF is a high-performance tuner and demodulator IC for DVB-T applications and hybrid multi-mode applications combining DVB-T and other analog/digital terrestrial TV and cable TV standards including ATSC, ISDBT13, DTMB, NTSC, PAL, SECAM, DVB-C and DOCSIS.

“Fetch TV's new STBs are very innovative systems that make the most of the features and functions built into our MxL101SF tuner/demodulators,” said Will Torgerson, Vice President & General Manager of MaxLinear’s Broadband Group. “The small size and low power of the MxL101SF makes it possible to deliver multi-channel capability and HD TV features in such a small form factor.”

About the MxL101SF
The MxL101SF tuner provides complete frequency coverage from 44 MHz to 1GHz and consumes ~450 mW of power, making it an ideal choice for a wide array of applications including television sets, IPTV and terrestrial STBs like the Fetch TV devices.

In addition to integrating all functionality required to receive and demodulate DVB-T signals, the MxL101SF also provides access to the IF output signal of the tuner, enabling hybrid implementations by connecting a discrete analog or digital demodulator to the tuner IF output interface. This configuration leverages the built-in tuner to enable DVB-T/DVB-C or DVB-T/analog applications at a very low cost and in a very small footprint. The IF output frequency of MxL101SF devices is software configurable, which provides a seamless interface to all commonly available demodulators on the market today.

The MxL101SF utilizes MaxLinear’s unique API-based software architecture so that programming the devices requires just a few simple commands. A fully integrated loop-through function is also integrated on MxL101SF.

The MxL101SF is available in a 7mm x 7mm QFN 48 package and this highly integrated device reduces the external BOM to minimal standard value components.
