Wowza Media Systems Unveils Wowza Player at IBC 2016

New Player Completes End-to-End Solutions for Wowza Based Streaming Media Workflows

AMSTERDAM--()--IBC 2016 – Wowza Media Systems™, the leading software and cloud-based services provider of high-quality video and audio streaming technologies for organizations worldwide, today announced the public preview release of the Wowza™ Player. The new embeddable media player is designed to complement existing Wowza workflows for adaptive bitrate streaming and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). Additionally, the player will include new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that optimizes streaming bitrates based upon changing network conditions. Wowza unveiled the new player at its booth (#5.C42) during the 2016 IBC expo.

“Time and again our customers have asked if we could help streamline their workflows by providing an end-to-end solution,” says Charlie Good, CTO and cofounder, Wowza Media Systems. “Now, with the introduction of the Wowza Player, and future development kit, we’re giving application developers, live event producers and service providers a full suite of software products to address almost every live streaming or VOD need.”

The feature rich Wowza Player easily embeds into new and existing web applications, providing greater flexibility and control of the entire streaming workflow, while taking advantage of the emerging HLS playback requirements of today’s devices.

Key features of the Wowza Player include:

  • Embeddable HTML5 player, requiring no plugins, with superior and responsive playback
  • Plays everywhere, on all browsers and devices
  • UI basic controls for dimension resizing, play, pause, seek, mute, normal screen, full screen, auto-start
  • Variable bitrate playback, with AI-based quality optimization
  • DVR capabilities, allowing publishers to set specific time-second windows for playback, allowing viewers to go back to replay or skip ahead in a live broadcast
  • Supports audio only streams for podcasters and Internet radio broadcasts
  • Simple to use JavaScript API, including ID3 metadata for ease of deployment

The Wowza Player is available for both paid and trial subscriptions of Wowza Streaming Engine™ software v4.6, and the Wowza Streaming Cloud™ service. Wowza Player is compatible with Wowza Streaming Engine software, versions 2.0 and higher, which support HLS, and existing customers may request access to the Wowza Player Builder. Additionally, subscribers to Wowza Streaming Cloud will have the ability to white-label the player, giving customers the ability to incorporate full playback on their desired endpoint, without the Wowza logo visible on cursor roll-over.

Wowza will continue to support third-party players, including JW Player, Bitmovin Bitdash Player, OpenTelly THEO Player, NexStreaming, Radiant Media Player; and native players for set-top boxes and mobile devices.
