LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global human albumin market 2016-2020 is expected to grow at a CAGR of almost 5% during the forecast period.
This research report titled ‘Global Human Albumin Market 2016-2020’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This market research report also includes an up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.
“The demand for albumin is high in APAC in countries such as India and China. However, the uptake of these therapeutics is still less due to the lack of awareness about these products and their therapeutic uses. Thus, the awareness programs conducted by organizations such as PPTA, which includes International Plasma Awareness Week, to help increase the awareness about plasma donation and the different plasma protein therapies available, along with their potential uses,” says Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for cardiovascular and metabolic disorders research.

The report categorizes the global human albumin market into four major segments by application. They are:
- Replacement therapy
- Drug formulation and delivery
- Vaccine ingredients
- Others
Replacement therapy
Fluid replacement or volume replacement is essential in individuals who have lost massive volumes of blood. Albumin therapy helps in restoring and maintaining the blood volumes. Albumin can be used in the form of a plasma expander during cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries or for treating sepsis in individuals with liver cirrhosis, burns, or critically-ill patients. It is also used to treat hypoalbuminemia and shock. A number of marketed albumin products such as Alburex, Albuminar, and Humanalbin are used as replacement therapy.
Drug formulation and delivery
The biochemical and biophysical properties of albumin make it an excellent platform for drug delivery. Albumin interacts with a number of receptors in the body such as gp18, gp30, gp60, FcRn, cubilin and, megalin, improving the half-life, stability, versatility, safety, and ease of manufacture of the drugs. It is linked to drugs by conjugation or genetic fusion. Drugs using albumin as drug formulation and delivery device include Abraxane, Victoza, Levenir, and Ablavar. Apart from these, drugs in various stages of development use albumin as an agent for drug formulation and delivery.
Vaccine ingredients
Albumin is added as an ingredient in vaccines and primarily acts as a stabilizer, which helps the vaccines remain unchanged. Both the human serum albumin and recombinant albumins are used as stabilizers in various vaccines. Human serum albumin is used in chickenpox vaccines such as Varilrix, and recombinant albumin is used in measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines such as MMRVaxPro.
Others
“Apart from the applications mentioned above, albumin-based products are also used in medical devices, medical imaging, in-vitro fertilization, and cell cultures,” says Barath. Albumin is extensively used in nanoparticle technology and is an excellent instrument for medical imaging. It can be radiolabeled with fluorescent dyes and used for targeted imaging. For instance, researchers at Rutgers Cancer Institute are developing a new cancer imaging technology, which uses dyes encapsulated in a shell of human serum albumin. Albumin can also be used in medical devices such as blood-contacting medical devices as a coating agent. It is also added to the medium for in-vitro fertilization, where it acts as a source of amino acids.
