The report segments the global pea protein market into three major product types. They are:

  • Textured
  • Isolates
  • Concentrates

Global textured pea protein market

The global textured pea protein market is expected to exceed USD 12 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of close to 9%. Popularly known as a meat extender, textured pea protein is used to partially substitute meat in burgers, chicken nuggets, and meatballs. Textured pea protein is categorized as dry textured and wet textured.

“Owing to their high fiber content, textured pea protein is incorporated in dietary supplements and beverages. They gain a fibrous consistency after rehydration and assume a texture and mouthfeel comparable to that of meat. They are therefore perfectly suited for use in prepared meat applications, readymade vegetarian meals, and Bolognese-type sauces. Thus, due to their wide usage, they are expected to register rapid growth during the forecast period,” says Arushi Thakur, an industrial expert at Technavio for food research.

Global pea protein isolates market

The global pea protein isolates market is expected to exceed USD 11 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of close to 9%. The pea protein isolates are a more refined version of concentrates, with 95% protein, along with foaming, binding, and texturizing capabilities. Given their high amino acid content, high solubility, and excellent emulsification and water-binding characteristics, it is easy to formulate isolates into meat substitutes. They can also be texturized to create products with a meat-like consistency and appearance. Their high protein content and the presence of lysine, arginine, and branched chain amino acids make them a viable choice in sports nutrition products. They also emerge as an alternative to whey and soy protein for body builders. In addition, due to the high protein content of isolates, they can be used in lower quantities, resulting in significant cost reduction.

The increasing demand for protein powders in bakery products will augment the demand for pea proteins over the forecast period. Being clean label, allergen-free, and cost-effective compared to other proteins, pea protein isolates are popular in the processed food industry. “Given their plethora of applications, pea protein isolates are expected to register the highest growth during the forecast period,” says Arushi.

Global pea protein concentrates market

The global pea protein concentrates market will exceed USD 11 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 9%. The protein content in pea concentrates is up to 75%. Concentrates have larger particle sizes (20-30 microns) when compared to isolates but are still in powder form. Their comparatively larger particle size makes them ideal in water-absorbing applications and for enhancing the texture in pastas and baked products.

Pea protein concentrates mix well with dry ingredients when dissolved in hot water. The concentrate-water mixture resembles egg yolk in color and consistency. Concentrates find use in foods, beverages, and aqua feed. Pea protein concentrates are increasingly used in pet foods across formats, from wet foods to extruded foods to injection-molded treats. Increased demand from these end-use industries is likely to fuel the growth of this market segment during the forecast period.
