New Survey Results: 60% of DOT Respondents Using e-Construction Tools Reported On-Time Deliveries

Pavia Systems’ commissioned e-Construction survey of transportation professionals, positive results

SEATTLE--()--Pavia Systems, a transportation infrastructure software company, recently polled more than 180 U.S. transportation industry professionals including employees from the Federal Highway Administration and Department of Transportation(s), to better assess the impacts of e-Construction on U.S. transportation construction deliveries. E-Construction is the collection, review, approval and distribution of highway construction contract documents in a paperless environment. Results pointed to the growing trend of using e-Construction tools such as electronic tablets on road construction projects. The survey found that the majority of survey participants, 54 percent, either use or have piloted e-Construction tools and processes, and another 29 percent are exploring e-Construction options. Respondents from state departments of transportations (DOTs) indicated e-Construction is becoming mainstream, with 82 percent reporting they have either adopted or piloted e-Construction tools, and another 11 percent are exploring their use.

60 percent of DOT respondents using e-Construction tools reported on-time deliveries. Additionally, the survey found that the top three uses for e-Construction are to make key documents easily available to field personnel, to digitize project inspections and to manage the design, letting and bidding process. The top three perceived benefits were reduced usage of paper, printing and documenting storage needs and improved document distribution and workflow.

“WSDOT’s use of Headlight and other e-Construction initiatives has helped our agency experience the benefits of e-Construction for efficiency, accuracy and paper elimination,” said assistant state construction engineer, Derek Case, from Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). “E-Construction has exciting potential for our agency and we are only just beginning to scratch the surface of all it can do.”

More and more DOTs, construction firms, design consultants and construction managers are choosing to function in a paperless environment and use e-Construction tools. Pavia Systems’ HeadLight technology is a purpose built, real-time strategic project inspection tool designed to provide teams with easier, more effective and less-costly ways for performing inspections in the field while at the same time providing ultimate stakeholder visibility into the project.

“Pavia Systems was honored to sponsor the e-Construction survey,” said Si Katara, president and co-founder of Pavia Systems. “We believe by helping organizations understand their needs, we’re able to play a positive role in helping adopt such tools in their business.”
