TECHNAVIO ANNOUNCES TOP FOUR EMERGING TRENDS IMPACTING THE GLOBAL LUXURY MASSAGE CHAIR MARKET THROUGH 2020

Technavio’s latest report on the global luxury massage chair market provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

Abhay Sinha, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on health and wellness sector, says, “The massage chair contains internal electronic motors and gears to provide massage to the person sitting on them. The demand for luxury massage chair is rising due to an increase in the working population, a decrease in leisure time, and prevalence of on-the- go lifestyle.”

The top four emerging trends driving the global luxury massage chair market according to Technavio research analysts are:

  • Massage chairs at workplaces and hotels
  • Massage chairs with interactive features
  • Growing use at public places
  • Popularity of zero gravity massage chairs

Massage chairs at workplaces and hotels

Repetitive musculoskeletal injuries have become the leading workplace health cost and accounted for almost a third of all workers’ compensation awards. In order to address these issues, regular massage therapy is the recommended solution, which can be provided through these massage chairs.

According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), Johnson and Johnson has been offering massages by massage therapists as an employee benefit. Allstate, Best Buy, Cisco Systems, FedEx, and Gannett are some of the other companies that have also started offering massage chair therapy to their employees. Hotels have also started offering massage chairs to their customers, especially to corporate clients.

Massage chairs with interactive features

The global luxury massage chair market is witnessing an increase in R&D expenditure by vendors. Vendors are working towards improving the features and effectiveness of the massage chair while simultaneously reducing the cost of upgrades and maintenance. For example, features such as voice-activated control systems allow users to set commands such as switching the chair on or off, setting a massage program, reclining, or sitting upright.

Advanced technologies such as sense detectors can determine the effectiveness of the massage. The sensations of comfort and pain are picked up by the sensors through changes in the pulse and sweat patterns. Individual users can then, adjust the chair's pressure pads accordingly.

Growing use at public places

There is an increasing trend of using massage chairs at public places such as shopping malls, airports, hospitals (for visitors), and car wash centers. Vendors are also providing coin-operated massage chairs for commercial use. The massage program runs automatically for a fixed period of time, after inserting coins costing between 1-10 dollars.

Sunner Group is engaged in providing massage chairs in public spaces. Smarte Carte, known for renting airport luggage carts, offers self-serviced, automated massage chairs in about 30 US airports.

Popularity of zero gravity massage chairs

Zero gravity is one of the newest features incorporated in massage chairs by brands like Osaki and Fujita. “These chairs are designed to give the user a similar sensation to that felt by astronauts during lift-off in a spaceship,” says Abhay.

Activating the zero gravity function causes the chair to recline to the point where the user’s legs are higher than the torso. This position allows for a deeper and more intense massage and helps in the reduction of stress, increase in blood circulation, and prevention of varicose veins. Due to its numerous advantages, the zero gravity technology has been integrated into many luxury massage chairs.
