LONGVIEW, Texas & HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm is utilizing National Bike Month in May to offer advice for reducing traumatic brain injuries through helmet use and educating motorists on the dangers of distracted driving and its effect on cyclist injuries and fatalities. John Sloan, founding partner with the Sloan Firm, is an expert source available to media seeking commentary and background information related to news and feature stories on traumatic brain injuries and distracted driving.
The Sloan Firm’s attorneys and staff are the designated Texas ambassadors for the national “Heads in Helmets” program (www.headsinhelmets.com), which provides safety helmets in an effort to prevent traumatic head injuries among young children. The Firm has handled several serious cases related to accidents and injuries incurred by bicyclists/motorcyclists who have been hit by automobiles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that 85% of head injuries in bicycle accidents can be prevented by wearing a helmet. Additionally, each day in the United States, over eight people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Statistically someone dies from a head injury every five minutes. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute, each year about two percent of motor vehicle crash deaths are bicyclists. In a majority of bicyclist deaths, the most serious injuries are to the head, highlighting the importance of wearing a helmet.
“Brain injuries produce lifelong disability. It’s devastating to see victims of traumatic brain injuries entering our offices seeking counsel and support for their recovery,” said John Sloan, founding partner of Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm. “The statistics are sobering. It is my firm’s mission to undertake critical advocacy for helmet use, not only for cycling but for other athletic endeavors prone to head injury, while also encouraging motorists to slow down and pay more attention to the road.”
Sloan added that helmet use is not just for children. Parents need to set the example when riding, as well. The Sloan Firm is intent on reducing the overwhelming public health threat created by lack of helmet use and distracted driving.
“The Sloan Firm is the first ambassador for the Justice For Children Foundation in Texas. We have distributed more than 6,300 free safety helmets in Texas since 2013,’” said Kevin Fullen, The Sloan Firm’s administrator. “Heads in Helmets promotes awareness to prevent traumatic brain injuries in children through education and the use of safety helmets. We are actively involved in the communities where our firm maintains offices and we want to be known as a law firm that cares about individuals and families when they are safe and well --not only when they are injured or facing traumatic situations.”
