REDMOND, Wash.--()--(Product Bulletin) -- Physio-Control was selected to provide LIFEPAK® monitor/defibrillator devices and LIFEPAK and HeartSine® automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for use during the 120th Boston Marathon on April 18, 2016. Ten Physio-Control staff members will also attend the event and be available for equipment support and on-the-spot training.

Like stretching before or staying hydrated during a run, quick access to cardiac monitoring and defibrillation is an important precaution for strenuous sporting events and large-scale public events generally. Approximately 30,000 runners and 1 million spectators are expected to attend this year’s marathon, and the safety of race participants and bystanders is the event’s ultimate goal. Many different security measures will be in place during the event and Physio-Control will be part of the larger safety network working behind the scenes.

“Runners and bystanders should be able to focus solely on the race – they will not need to worry about quick access to safety equipment like monitors, defibrillators, and AEDs,” said Cam Pollock, Chief Marketing Officer, Physio-Control. “Just as we know every mile counts during a marathon, every minute counts when experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. We are looking forward to supporting a safe and healthy Boston Marathon throughout all 26.2 miles and before and after the event.”

If a runner or bystander experiences sudden cardiac arrest, LIFEPAK and HeartSine defibrillators can be used to deliver a potentially lifesaving shock to restart the heart.

The LIFEPAK 15 monitor/defibrillator offers sophisticated clinical technologies with a variety of innovative features – including the most powerful escalating defibrillation energy available (up to 360J), advanced monitoring parameters such as noninvasive carbon monoxide and methemoglobin, and a metronome to guide CPR compressions and ventilations. LIFEPAK and HeartSine AEDs are designed to guide the first person to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest victim in administering CPR and defibrillation if needed. The devices work within a total system of care that supports the entire chain of survival for sudden cardiac arrest patients.

“Our program could not provide the types of medical care we offer each year without the partnership of companies like Physio-Control,” said Chris Troyanos, Boston Marathon medical director.

The LIFEPAK 15 Monitor/Defibrillator devices will be located in the marathon’s main medical tents and the AEDs will be strategically placed throughout the race route.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. Death can occur shortly after symptoms appear without rapid intervention and treatment. Each year, more than 420,000 emergency medical services-assessed cardiac arrests occur in the United States. The American Heart Association states that “there is clear and consistent evidence of improved survival from sudden cardiac arrest when a bystander performs CPR and rapidly uses an AED.”
