BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) today amped up the Un-carrier’s popular video initiative, Binge On. Starting today, Baeble Music, Discovery GO, ESNE TV, FilmOn.TV, Fox Business, Google Play Movies, KlowdTV, Red Bull TV, YouTube and more can stream without eating up customers’ high-speed data. That makes for more than 50 video services now streaming free with an eligible rate plan and subscription where applicable. The full list of current Binge On providers can be found at www.t-mobile.com/bingeon. These services represent 70% of all video T-Mobile customers watch on their phones and tablets each month. In addition, T-Mobile announced it’s giving video streaming providers more options to choose how Binge On’s video optimization will apply to their content.
“The facts are clear – Binge On is a runaway hit, and adding these services is just huge! Now T-Mobile customers can watch all of the videos they want from these platforms without even touching their high-speed data,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “Demand for mobile video is skyrocketing. Customers at the Duopoly can either stop watching or pay bigger bills and surprise overage charges. Only T-Mobile customers with Binge On have the option to stretch their data further at no extra cost! That’s the Un-carrier way!”
In nearly four months since it launched, Binge On has fundamentally changed the way T-Mobile customers watch videos—and is one of the Un-carrier’s most popular initiatives of all time, if not the most popular. T-Mobile customers are streaming more than ever:
- Customers are watching twice as many hours per day, in longer and more frequent viewing sessions, than before launch from free streaming services on qualifying plans with limited high-speed data.
- More than 57 million GB (57 petabytes) have been streamed without burning up customers’ high-speed data. That’s like watching Adele’s 15 minute Carpool Karaoke with James Corden more than 460 million times.
- One video provider has seen the number of active viewers spike 90% and watch-times nearly triple from customers with limited high-speed data.
Options for Customers
In recent months, T-Mobile has rolled out a steady stream of enhancements to Binge On—more than doubling the number of video services that stream without using high-speed data and making it easier for customers to manage their settings directly from their phone with SMS short codes and with fewer clicks from the T-Mobile app and on my.tmobile.com. Any customer can change their Binge On settings and the change will take effect within minutes.
New Options for Video Providers
Today, T-Mobile announced yet another update and new options for video providers giving them more choice over how Binge On’s video optimization applies to their content. Now video providers can choose to have their content stream at native resolutions – including Ultra HD and beyond – without Binge On’s mobile optimization using up customers’ high-speed data faster.
Video providers deciding to exclude their content from mobile optimization and/or free streaming will only need to email bingeon@t-mobile.com and meet straightforward technical criteria so T-Mobile can identify their video streams reliably. Customers will be able to find a list of non-mobile optimized services online at www.t-mobile.com/bingeon.
In addition, T-Mobile is working with providers to give them the ability to manage their video stream themselves. Instead of T-Mobile’s systems optimizing video, the video provider will automatically stream a mobile-optimized video when a T-Mobile customer with Binge On activated begins streaming. YouTube will be one of the first to take advantage of this option, and other providers can learn more about the technical requirements by emailing bingeon@t-mobile.com.
