Digitization of Learning Content Expected to Boost the Education PC and Tablet Market in the US, Says Technavio

LONDON--()--Technavio analysts expect the education PC and tablet market in the US to exceed USD 16,131 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 20%, according to their latest report.

The education PC and tablet market in the US has grown rapidly in the past few years and is expected to maintain high growth during the forecast period. The K-12 schools segment is the biggest consumer of these devices as a result of the US government's efforts to support the digitization of education. Also, the government's emphasis on improving the quality of education through standardized tests culture is triggering growth in the education PC and tablet market in the US.

According to Jhansi Mary, a lead research analyst at Technavio for education technology, “An e-learning environment provides digital platforms and a content library, which are mapped to the respective curriculum. This facilitates the integration of text, audio, video, and 3D content, which enables effective lectures and ensures sufficient content retention by students.”

Technavio’s lead education market research analysts have identified the following four factors that will drive the education PC and tablet market in the US:

  • Government initiatives
  • Culture of standardized testing
  • Digitization of learning content
  • Focus on K-12 and pre-K-12 schools

Government initiatives

The US government is playing a pivotal role in fostering the use of technology in education. It acts as a facilitator for the educational institutions to procure the hardware required for classroom teaching such as tablets, projectors, interactive white board (IWB) solutions and tablets to promote technological advances in the education sector.

In order to foster online education further, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in collaboration with the US Department of Education, launched a digital textbook playbook in 2013. It acquaints K-12 educators and administrators with digital learning content and tools. It facilitates planning for connectivity at school and outside school, determining the IT infrastructure needed, and ensuring technical support is available.

Culture of standardized testing

Education standardization and benchmarking initiatives are aimed at improving the quality of education. In order to monitor the growth of the learning quotient of students, a range of standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT are used at various levels. Schools and colleges have been entrusted with the responsibility of enhancing the performance of students in these tests.

The US government has strict laws in place to deal with non-performing educational institutions. The measures that the government could take against such institutions include curtailment of funding. Therefore, educational institutions have embraced teaching through devices such as laptops and desktops. These devices help students focus clearly on the classes and quickly gain a thorough understanding of the subject.

Digitization of learning content

The US as a developed country is focusing more on the digitization of the study materials used in curricula. There has been an explosion in the volume of online content. Hence, US educational institutions are including educational hardware such as tablets as part of classroom teaching in order to facilitate learning through multiple sources.

“The introduction of these personal devices allows educational institutions to adopt the student-centered model, which is highly personalized and enables incorporation of global competitive standards. The use of these devices also offers various advantages such as reduced printing costs and environmental impact,” says Jhansi.

Online learning has paved the way for invention of various complementary courses that enhance a student's qualifications. The desire to gain these skills is gaining traction among job seekers. Educational institutions also pay subscriptions for such courses.

All of the above mentioned factors will help in further boosting the demand for education PCs and tablets in the US during the forecast period.

Focus on K-12 and pre-K-12 schools

The US is placing increased emphasis on serving the K-12 and pre-K-12 school segments of the education sector. Initially, vendors were inclined toward providing their services to higher education. However, growing opportunities in the K-12 and pre-K-12 end-user segments have encouraged vendors to target these segments and leverage their existing expertise to market tablets and laptops tailored to suit the needs of K-12 and pre-K-12 schools.

For instance, Samsung serves Eloy Elementary School in Arizona through its product Samsung School, which includes a range of solutions from tablets to classroom management software.
