Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Announces Effort to Align and Streamline Quality Measures

CAPG Joins Stakeholder Groups in the Health Industry to Release First Set of Core Measures for Use in Quality Measurement Programs across Payers

WASHINGTON--()--Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and a broad collaborative of health system participants released seven sets of core clinical quality measures. These core measures are intended to support alignment across payers for physician quality programs. The collaborative’s work is informing CMS’s implementation of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) and is intended to reduce the reporting burden on physicians while improving the quality of care for patients.

Currently, physicians are required to report different quality measures to different payers. The measures are often inconsistent and not aligned across public and private payers, and the reporting and tracking creates a burden on physician organizations. To begin addressing this problem, CAPG joined the Core Measures Collaborative, which includes CMS, health plans, purchasers, and physician organizations. The goal of the Collaborative is to develop core sets of quality measures that payers have committed to use for reporting as soon as possible. The Collaborative will continue its work to refine the existing sets and add new sets over time.

“CAPG is committed to reducing the burden and administrative complexity that existing quality reporting programs place on our members,” said Dr. Amy Nguyen Howell, CAPG’s Chief Medical Officer. “CAPG members are on the forefront of payment reform innovation. For example, our members are participating in accountable care organizations with public and private payers, in bundled payment initiatives, and in alternative payment contracts in Medicare Advantage. Today’s Collaborative announcement represents an important first step toward harmonization of the different reporting obligations across payer initiatives.”

Today’s announcement includes seven sets of measures:

  • Accountable Care Organizations and Patient Centered Medical Homes and Primary Care
  • Cardiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • HIV and Hepatitis C
  • Medical Oncology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Orthopedics
