Hawaii Department of Health Continues to Improve the Vital Records Online Ordering System

HONOLULU--()--The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) announced new features for the vital records ordering and tracking service, vitrec.ehawaii.gov, including the capability to provide requestors with information on supporting documentation that is needed to determine eligibility for a birth or marriage record, and the ability to upload a copy of the required documentation. Also, the requestor now has the ability to elect cash payment as part of the online order submission with pick-up at DOH option.

Access to vital records is restricted by statute (HRS §338-18) in Hawaii. “We are the custodian of the records and it’s our responsibility to make sure the records are available to requestors with privacy and security in mind,” said Alvin T. Onaka, Ph.D., State Registrar and Chief of the Office of Health Status Monitoring (OHSM).

The new upload feature will streamline the process and reduce the need for DOH staff to reach out to the requestors to provide additional documentation. Requestors will have the option to mail-in the supporting documentation or bring it to DOH upon pick up.

The Hawaii DOH encourages eligible individuals to submit orders online prior to coming to the DOH Punchbowl location in Honolulu. Requestors have the option to either securely pay with a credit/debit card online, or elect to pay by cash when picking up the order. Two kiosks are also available in the lobby for anyone who was not able to complete the order online prior to arrival.

Since the initial launch of the system in February of this year, the DOH has been able to reduce the average wait time for mail-delivery orders from 56 business days to six days. Individuals with prepaid pick-up orders can be in and out of the office in as little as five minutes.

The online ordering and tracking service and its improvements are implemented in partnership with the DOH OHSM, DOH Health Information Systems Office, and Hawaii Information Consortium, LLC, the official Internet portal manager of eHawaii.gov.
