SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--InvenSense, Inc., (NYSE:INVN), a leading provider of MEMS sensor platform solutions, announced its 3rd generation 9-axis MotionTracking device. The ICM-20948 is the lowest power 9-axis motion sensing device on the market at only 2.65mW and comes in a 3x3x1mm QFN package. The fully integrated 9-axis device includes a 3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis magnetometer and includes an onboard Digital Motion Processor™ (DMP). The DMP allows for complete 9-axis sensor fusion performed on chip, which enables lower system power by offloading motion processing algorithms from a host processor while improving system performance and responsiveness in low power applications, especially critical to wearable and IoT devices.
InvenSense has partnered with Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (“AKM”), a leading manufacturer of 3-axis magnetometer using Hall element technology, to combine AKM’s new magnetometer with InvenSense’s latest 6-axis solution, providing an integrated 9-axis solution that is factory pre-calibrated and tested. The ICM-20948 is supported by 9-axis MotionFusion software available as part of the InvenSense production-proven MotionApps™ software platform. The ICM-20948 is package and pin compatible with the InvenSense MPU-9250 MotionTracking device that has been widely adopted in many IoT applications. The ICM-20948 supports an auxiliary I2C interface to external sensors, on-chip ADCs, programmable digital filters, an embedded temperature sensor and programmable interrupts.
“A 9-axis IMU is necessary to enable use cases for wearable products and other IoT applications, such as panoramic viewing for VR/HMD, head tracking for smart glasses, overlay of text and pictures for augmented reality devices, providing true north heading, dead reckoning, and even counting the number of laps in a swimming pool for wrist worn devices,” said Eitan Medina, vice president of marketing and product management at InvenSense. “InvenSense delivers the lowest power, smallest size, and highest performance 9-axis IMU enabling our wearable, IoT, and mobile customers to solve all their accelerometer/gyroscope/magnetometer related sensor applications efficiently and at a lower BOM price solution.”
InvenSense’s ICM-20948 will be sampling in Q1 of 2016. InvenSense is exhibiting in booth #36217 in South Hall 4 at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 6 - 9, 2016.
