Independent Surgical Practice Chooses McKesson for Revenue Cycle Services

Wisconsin group seeks technology upgrade

ATLANTA--()--An independent orthopedic group based in Milwaukee has contracted with McKesson Business Performance Services (McKesson) to improve its billing capabilities through new technology and a full range of revenue cycle management services.

Orthopedic Surgeons of Wisconsin, SC, which does business as the Orthopedic Institute of Wisconsin (OIW), contracted with McKesson for complete revenue cycle services, including provider enrollment and credentialing, clinical documentation assistance, coding, claims management, denial management, compliance and business intelligence reporting. McKesson also will deploy a proprietary billing platform to replace the group’s existing outdated technology. The new system will enable electronic interfaces with hospital data feeds, as well as electronic claims submission.

“McKesson not only has the knowledge, experience and resources necessary to assist OIW with its billing processes, but they also offered an ideal approach for working with our existing billing staff,” said Cheryl Leissring, practice administrator of OIW. “In this very challenging time in healthcare, we are confident that partnering with McKesson will help OIW remain as a strong and independent practice.”

Leissring said that in addition to benefiting from expedited charge entry, systematic claims and denial management and additional automation, the group was looking forward to harnessing McKesson’s comprehensive business intelligence reporting.

“The detail that McKesson’s reports provide in a range of areas will give us a level of operational insight we’ve never had before,” Leissring said. “We are likewise grateful to have the benefit of their expertise regarding multiple regulatory compliance requirements.”

OIW is a 14-physician group affiliated with three hospitals in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The practice treats a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions and is responsible for over 280,000 procedures and visits annually.

Pat Leonard, president of McKesson Business Performance Services, said independent specialty groups like OIW increasingly understand the importance of optimizing their revenue cycle management in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare market.

“The complexities of today’s changing delivery, payment and compliance environments, coupled with the economic pressure that all practices face, make it imperative for groups to optimize and streamline the revenue cycle process,” Leonard said. “McKesson’s job is to support practices in every way that we can, so that they’re able to focus on what matters most: The practice of medicine.”
