Most recently, Dr. Winkenwerder served as chief executive officer of Highmark Inc. Highmark is among the ten largest US health insurers and is the third largest integrated financing and delivery system, with $17.5B in annual revenues, based in Pittsburgh, PA, operating Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans in three states and a $2.5B integrated hospital-physician network in western PA.
Dr. Winkenwerder is an influential and very well recognized leader in the US healthcare, and is recognized as a health industry expert in health insurance operations, integrated delivery, federal policy and economics and health information technology. From 2001 to 2007, Dr. Winkenwerder served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs in the United States Department of Defense where he led the medical support programs for Military Health System. Before that, he held senior leadership roles at Blue Cross of Massachusetts, Prudential Healthcare and Emory University. Dr. Winkenwerder is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a board certified physician who has practiced in primary care internal medicine.
