Ethertronics Introduces EtherModule 2.0™, a Robust Plug-and-Play Active Antenna System Module for M2M and IoT Vendors

Utilizing EtherChip EC446™, the Turnkey Solution Delivers Higher Performance in a Flexible, Smaller Design

LAS VEGAS & SAN DIEGO--()--Ethertronics, a leading technology company enabling innovative antenna and RF system solutions to deliver the best connected experience, is showcasing EtherModule 2.0™, a plug-and-play, active antenna system module for Machine to Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) vendors during CTIA Super Mobility Week 2015 (booth #5538).

Joining the award-winning EtherModule family of active antenna system modules, EtherModule 2.0 addresses the challenges facing today’s M2M and IoT product designers by allowing characteristics of the antenna and RF performance to be adapted to the environment experienced by the antenna; providing optimal connectivity in less-than-ideal RF environments. Using EC446™, which integrates a microcontroller, a tunable capacitor, and low-loss Sp4T switch, EtherModule 2.0 is capable of correcting the impedance mismatch and retuning the antenna to compensate for frequency shifts caused by environmental changes, such as loading changes due to hand or head proximity.

EtherModule 2.0 covers a wide frequency range from 700 MHz to 3 GHz. The module portion is in a stamp module form factor of 14 mm x 10.5 mm x 1.6 mm, which can be easily surface mounted onto a host board. The separate antenna is also plug-and-play to enable a system design approach, providing M2M and IoT developers better design flexibility. EtherModule 2.0’s plug-and-play characteristics enable product designers to efficiently deliver and integrate a high-performance, adaptive antenna solution, which can be used in a variety of M2M/IoT applications including: WiFi, M2M, ISM (2.4 GHz, 868 MHz, 915 MHz), smart meters / smart grid systems and other wireless devices.

“With the continued expansion of the M2M and IoT markets, we’re seeing increased demand for advanced plug-and-play solutions that need to meet higher expectations for the users and designers. EtherModule 2.0 was designed with the systems integrator in mind for integration ease,” said Olivier Pajona, Chief Scientist for Ethertronics. “EtherModule 2.0 is a testament to our continued dedication to customers by developing highly advanced solutions to help them differentiate their products and stand out in a competitive market by providing maximum performance and reliability.”

This turnkey module addresses the challenges facing today’s M2M and IoT product designers by minimizing the need for additional engineering design time and getting products to market faster. Given the combination of closed loop functionality with a proprietary algorithm integrated in conjunction with a microprocessor, the module is capable of dynamically sensing and optimizing the antenna system, without external control signals from the device. This approach provides tuning capability; seamlessly adjusting the characteristics of the antenna to its dynamic requirements.
