LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--To express its thanks to the thousands of loyal customers who supported Newegg in its fight against patent trolls, the company announced today that it will celebrate its latest patent troll victory with a day of great deals. On Tuesday, July 28 Newegg will run a 24-hour “When We Win, You Win” celebratory sale, offering deep discounts on some of today’s hottest technology products.
Newegg is widely known for refusing to pay the “toll of the troll,” fighting patent trolls aggressively when most others choose to settle. This latest victory over TQP Development who claimed to own the rights to basic online encryption is further validation of Newegg’s effort to thwart the extortion-based business model where shell companies are used to file dozens, and sometimes hundreds of lawsuits against honest businesses, demanding settlements to avoid high litigation costs.
“We chose many years ago to fight meritless patent lawsuits not just as a matter of principle, but for our customers as well. Companies that settle with patent trolls ultimately pass those costs on to their customers,” said Lee Cheng, Newegg’s Chief Legal Officer. “We want to show that our victories come with benefits for our customers. When we win, our customers win.”
Since 2006, Newegg has never lost a patent troll case after trial. Newegg’s efforts have resulted in the invalidation of several infamous patents, including one covering the online Shopping Cart used by notorious patent troll Soverain Software to obtain millions of dollars in settlements from hundreds of companies. The TQP Development patent asserted against Newegg was used to obtain $45M in settlement dollars from dozens of defendants.
Cheng added, “We have long believed paying trolls off only encourages and funds more lawsuits. Why would we want to contribute to that ridiculous cycle? Our customers have always appreciated that we don’t do things the same way other companies do. This sale is to thank them for believing in us.”
