NTT Communications to Trial Enhanced DDoS Defense Orchestrator System

Aims to become Japan’s first telecom to provide multihomed anti-DDoS service

TOKYO--()--NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced today that it will trial an enhanced DDoS orchestrator system to detect, analyze and defend against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks using a testing environment constructed by multiple security companies, starting June 8. DDoS are attacks on computer networks in which a number of computers distributed among multiple networks simultaneously send connection requests to a network or group of computers to overload their channel capacity and shut them down.

The trial will test the operability of unique channel-control technology developed by NTT Com to minimize the negative effects, such as delays in normal communications, of implementing a DDoS defense. NTT Com is Japan’s first communications provider to conduct a multihomed anti-DDoS service that would be available to all companies using or providing Internet services.

DDoS attacks are steadily growing in both size and number, leading to Internet congestion and significant harm to companies. Nevertheless, a large number of companies that use or provide ISP, data center or cloud services have yet to implement measures against increasingly diverse and complex DDoS attacks. The deployment of appropriate anti-DDoS services and measures is urgently required.

One factor that has inhibited deployment, however, is that companies using multiple ISPs are required to implement separate anti-DDoS measures for each ISP. This makes it difficult to centralize DDoS management and responses due to varying service quality among ISPs, as well as complicates operations and lengthens the time of implementation.

Trial Overview

The trial, in addition to testing system operability, will identify possible technical problems and make evaluations from customers’ points of view.

NTT Com’s Unique Channel Control Technology
The testing environment incorporates NTT Com’s unique channel-control technology (patent pending), which reports the Internet routes used by specific traffic and enabling traffic from a DDoS attack to be routed to optimized points in NTT Com’s Global IP (GIP) and domestic OCN networks for Internet connection. The attacker’s specific traffic is drawn to the system’s DDoS defense devices, whereas normal communications experience only minimal delays.

Choice of Appropriate Defense Measures
The testing environment will enable the use of multiple defense devices. Companies participating in the trial will be able to select appropriate defense devices and measures via a management portal.

Evaluation of Defense Measures against Pseudo-attacks
Companies participating in the trial will use the NTT Com-provided portal to conduct pseudo-attacks and then evaluate the effectiveness of anti-DDoS measures that they create and implement.

The security companies participating in the trial are Arbor Networks, Inc., A10 Networks, K.K., and Radware Ltd. The user organizations include EHIME CATV Inc., INTERNET MULTIFEED Co., Interop Tokyo 2015 ShowNet, mixi Inc. and OKIT CORPORATION (only organizations that authorized release of their names are listed).
