LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that The Humana Foundation will donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross in support of relief efforts assisting victims of recent tornadoes, storms and floods in Texas. Flash floods and extreme weather have battered more than 100 counties in Texas, with 22 deaths and an estimated $1.1 billion in property damage attributed to the storms, according to the nonprofit Insurance Information Institute.
“The damage sustained by the communities and citizens Humana serves in Central Texas, North Texas and Houston was devastating – it is a terrible natural disaster,” said Dan Tufto, president of Senior Products for Humana in Texas. “We are committed to helping people in the region recover as quickly as possible and encourage others to help speed the rebuilding effort by donating to or volunteering with relief organizations like the American Red Cross.”
Severe weather has impacted Texas for several weeks and flash flood watches continued over the weekend. On Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster for 24 more counties, raising the total to 70 counties in the state with such a designation due to recent storms and flooding or earlier tornadoes. More than 8,000 residences in Texas have been affected, about half in the Houston area.
Officials with the American Red Cross said hundreds of volunteers are providing shelter, food, water, relief supplies, health services and emotional support to people in need. More than 1,800 Red Cross volunteers are manning 37 shelters and served 40,000 meals and snacks and handed out 34,000 relief items including cleaning supplies.
“Our sincere thanks to Humana for their generous support,” said American Red Cross of Central Texas Regional CEO Marty McKellips. “This gift will help us pay for sheltering and feeding thousands of our neighbors during their time of need, and to replenish our supplies to be ready for the next disaster.”
