Design Workshop Commits to Asia

Opens Shanghai Office, Hires Office Director

DENVER--()--Design Workshop, an international landscape architecture, planning, and urban design firm with 10 offices and work spanning the globe, is pleased to announce the opening of a new office in Shanghai, China.

The expansion is part of Design Workshop’s commitment to China, having just completed registration of a new WFOE company called Wojing (Shanghai) Landscape Architecture Design Consulting Co. Ltd. to serve the firm’s exceptional clients in China, as well as other international markets in Asia where the firm has an extensive portfolio of projects. The new office space is located at Suite 3108, United Plaza, 1468 Nanjing West Rd., Jingan District, Shanghai, China (200041) and will be led by Office Director Charles Cobble.

Prior to joining Design Workshop, Charles graduated from the University of Florida, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture in 1993. He spent several years with Smith Gilchrist in Tallahassee before joining Glatting Jackson in Orlando from 1996-2009, where he eventually became a Partner. The Great Recession in 2009 brought tremendous change to Glatting Jackson, propelling Charles to seek opportunities outside of the U.S. He spent several years as a Principal and Studio Leader at the Ager Group in Shanghai before spending 2010 and 2011 in the United Arab Emirates as the Head of Landscape Architecture and Planning for KEO Consultants. Charles returned to China in 2011 and has spent the last several years with Orient Land as a Director for Planning and Design for both their Beijing and Shanghai locations.

Charles has more than 20 years of experience as a design leader in landscape architecture, planning and urban design. His work has been internationally based with projects in North and Central America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and China. His portfolio includes hotels and resorts, theme parks, golf courses, mixed use/commercial and urban planning and design projects including built projects. He also has extensive experience with large scale master planning, project programming and positioning, branding and tourism development and resort hospitality planning and design. Throughout his career Charles has successfully planned, designed and supervised the construction of millions of dollars of work to the benefit of his clients and the users of the projects. He has led urban design and landscape architecture departments, set quality standards for design, managed multidisciplinary teams on complex projects and he is recognized as an exceptional designer and an inspirational leader.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to have a permanent home in Shanghai. We have been fortunate to create significant projects in China. Our new office will allow us to continue providing exceptional planning and design services to our Chinese and international clients,” noted Cobble.

Design Workshop is also very pleased to be publishing their newest book, Landscapes of Enduring Quality, which showcases 55 projects from across the United States and selected international locations. This bilingual publication, which features the projects of a landscape architecture, urban design and planning firm that has practiced domestically and internationally for more than 40 years, contains both English and Chinese language narratives that provide a glimpse into the philosophy and approach behind each design solution.

The book will be publicly released in June and will highlight a lecture given by Partner Jim MacRae and Principal Charles Cobble. The lecture will take place June 8 at Tongji University in Shanghai with an audience of government leaders, developers, design professionals and students. Jim and Charles will explore for the audience how the company’s unique design approach, DW Legacy Design, brings sustainable and beautiful solutions in measurable ways to the many pressing social, environmental and financial issues surrounding development in China.

The Shanghai office offers landscape architecture, urban design and community and regional planning services. For more information please contact Charles Cobble at 86 18621146771 or visit the Design Workshop website.
