Intermatic Donates Essential Defrost Timers to Ebola Treatment Mission

Equipment Supports Gates Foundation Cure Trials in West Africa

SPRING GROVE, Ill.--()--Intermatic, a leader in energy management solutions, today announced the company’s donation of six defrost timers to support efforts to find a cure for the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The defrost timers are manufactured for freezers and refrigerators in the life science industry and are being used in a unique clinical trial funded in 2014 by the Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation. The trial, ongoing in West Africa, is testing the safety and efficacy of treating infected patients with anti-Ebola antibodies contained in the blood plasma of survivors of Ebola. Freezers and refrigerators will store the blood plasma.

Helmer Scientific, a manufacturer and distributor of laboratory equipment and refrigeration products for the life science industry, contacted various vendors, including Intermatic Incorporated, for donations of component parts. Upon receiving the request, Intermatic Incorporated immediately shipped out the defrost timers.

“We were privileged to contribute to this important initiative,” says Liz Jacobs, Vice President of Marketing, Intermatic. “We wanted to help Helmer respond to this need in any way possible.”

Intermatic is the sole manufacturer of the defrost timers for Helmer Scientific equipment. The timers are equipped with battery backup, which is crucial to refrigerators and freezers used in life science activities since a power outage could render samples unusable. The battery backup eliminates the risk of power outage, keeping units running constantly.

“We are very proud of both the reliability of our products and the fact they can contribute to this life-saving effort,” says Adrienne Sander, OEM Sales, Intermatic.

The freezer and refrigerator donation resulted in two fully equipped mobile blood donation sites in West Africa. Clinical trials launched in early 2015, with the first Ebola patient receiving plasma from an Ebola survivor. At this time, the safety and efficacy of the treatment is still being evaluated.

“The Ebola virus disease is one of the most deadly and little-understood diseases in the world,” says Jacobs. “In keeping with our corporate values, we wanted to be involved in the fight against this disease”.
