Village Nurseries Promotes Mycorrhizae for Improved Plant Performance and Reduced Drought Stress

ORANGE, Calif.--()--Since Village Nurseries started inoculating its plant inventory with mycorrhizae, the specialty grower for landscape professionals’ customer base has reported a significant improvement in plant performance and drought resistance due to a reduced need for fertilizer and an increase in nutrient uptake.

"Mycor" - "rhiza" literally means "fungus" - "root" and defines the mutually beneficial relationship between the plant root and fungus. These specialized fungi colonize plant roots and extend far into the soil resource.

“Village Nurseries’ mycorrhiza products contain the most diverse and effective strains of mycorrhiza available anywhere,” said Mike Babineau, the company’s vice president for southern operations. “By utilizing this robust mix of beneficial soil organisms, our plants can survive and thrive the way nature intended. We have discovered that it spreads to other plants and increases the overall health of neighboring plants since mycorrhizae are truly extensions of root systems. As a result, they are more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves,” he added.

Proven benefits from Village Nurseries’ plant inoculation include:

  • Improves root growth
  • Improves nutrient uptake
  • Improves fruit and flower yield
  • Improves tolerance of environmental extremes
  • Reduces transplant shock
  • Reduces drought stress
  • Reduces soil-borne diseases
  • Reduces water usage
  • Reduces reliance on fertilizers

With the ongoing drought in California, exterior landscapes throughout the state will need to reduce irrigation cycles to help conserve water. Plants inoculated with mycorrhizae will perform better in the landscape with less irrigation.
