ONTARIO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Service Employees International Union Local 87, which represents workers at Seton Medical Center, has aligned with SEIU 121RN, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United and a growing list of SEIU-UHW members, urging Attorney General Kamala Harris to approve the sale of Daughters of Charity Hospitals to Prime Healthcare Services.
In its letter to the Attorney General, SEIU Local 87 urges Harris “to recognize that the impending bankruptcy of the Daughters of Charity Health system poses an extreme threat to the public health…(the union) calls upon the Attorney General to approve the proposed sale… (and calls) on all city leaders to support the nurses and community’s effort to protect these hospitals from closure and bankruptcy.”
SEIU Local 87 joins more than 50,000 Californians who have signed petitions or written letters in favor of the sale, which also has the support of over 30 current or former elected officials; thousands of physicians, nurses and patients; SEIU 121RN and the California Nurses Association, together representing nearly 200,000 workers; Daughters of Charity staff, including SEIU-UHW members; and dozens of community leaders, businesses and organizations. The sale has been endorsed by the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Gilroy Dispatch and the Morgan Hill Times newspapers in order to save the six hospitals, thousands of jobs and the pensions of 17,000 current and past workers.
