MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) today announced Rick Green as the new president and publisher of The Cincinnati Enquirer and regional president of Gannett U.S. Community Publishing (USCP) Ohio. Green is currently the president and publisher of The Des Moines Register. He succeeds Margaret Buchanan, who is retiring.
Green has been with Gannett for more than 25 years and is returning to Cincinnati, where he previously worked as assistant managing editor, business editor, suburban bureau chief and reporter. Green has led The Des Moines Register and served as a regional president since 2013. He was vice president and editor in Des Moines before being named publisher. Green has also served as executive editor at The Desert Sun in Palm Springs, CA; reporter for the Chillicothe (OH) Gazette; and reporter, photographer and sports columnist for the Coshocton (OH) Tribune, where he started as a high school sophomore.
An Ohio native, Green completed his journalism studies from Ohio University in 1987. He and his wife, Laura, have four children.
“Rick is an energetic, innovative and hard-working leader who has done great things as publisher in Des Moines,” said Robert Dickey, USCP president. “We look forward to Rick continuing his success and building upon the great work that Margaret has done in Cincinnati.”
Buchanan became president and publisher of The Cincinnati Enquirer in 2003 and later served as USCP group vice president and regional president as well. She was named USCP’s top publisher for 2008. Buchanan joined Gannett in 1986, where she served as special assistant to the publisher at The Enquirer and later served in marketing and advertising management roles at the Rockford (IL) Register Star. She was then named president and publisher of the Star-Gazette in Elmira, NY, in 1996 and the Idaho Statesman in Boise in 1999. Two years later she added group vice president title to her publisher role, overseeing several other newspapers.
“Margaret is deeply respected in her community and has led her teams successfully through many transitions,” said Dickey. “During her distinguished 29 years at Gannett, Margaret continually found new ways to serve her advertisers and reach new audiences. She has played a key role within USCP for decades and we wish her nothing but the best as she starts her next chapter.”
