Barcelona Digital Technology Centre Delivers E-Health and Smart Home Platform Using the WSO2 Carbon Platform

New case study examines how BDigital used pre-integrated WSO2 middleware products to mediate services across the cloud and Internet of Things, and manage APIs, applications, and identity

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--()--WSO2 today announced that Barcelona Digital Technology Centre (BDigital), a leading technology center for information and communication technologies (ICT), has developed the production version of its eKauri e-health and smart home platform using the 100% open source WSO2 Carbon middeware platform.

A new case study examines how BDigital implemented the cloud-enabled solution using Raspberry Pi and Z-Wave home automation devices along with four pre-integrated WSO2 Carbon products: WSO2 API Manager, WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (WSO2 ESB), WSO2 Application Server, and WSO2 Identity Server. The full case study can be downloaded at http://wso2.com/casestudies/bdigital-delivers-e-health-and-smart-home-platform-using-the-wso2-carbon-platform.

Building an E-Health and Smart Home Platform with WSO2 Software

Senior citizens—many in fragile health and requiring assistance—often have limited resources for managing their health, participating in society, and ensuring their security. BDigital provides smart solutions for therapy management, disease prevention and healthy habit promotion through its three lines of specialization: integrated continuous care, personalized computational medicine, and active independent living (AIL).

Recently, BDigital developed eKauri, a non-invasive e-health and smart home platform that empowers seniors to gain autonomy, participate in modern society, and improve quality of life. Using WSO2’s pre-integrated products, the company delivered the first minimally viable version of the product three months ahead of schedule. The case study discusses BDigital’s RESTful architecture and its decision to run applications in the cloud to address the low memory capacity of Internet of Things components. It also examines:

  • How WSO2 API Manager efficiently handles large e-health RESTful APIs managed by eKauri.
  • The use of WSO2 ESB for protocol mediation, as well as helping to ensure reliability and recovery through message persistence.
  • Best practices applied between WSO2 API Manager and ESB communication.
  • How WSO2 Identity Manager works with WSO2 ESB to manage authorization policies based on each user’s access level and attributes.
  • The role of WSO2 Application Manager in managing its large, Web-scale applications.

“WSO2’s middleware created a seamless environment that allowed for our programmers to rapidly gain an understanding of the technology as well as accelerate our integration and product development,” said Mr. Joan Protasio, BDigital software engineer. “As a result, we were able to complete the first minimally viable version of our product three months ahead of schedule, and we already have a built-in market and clients that want to pay for the product.”

Mr. Protasio added, “Now that we have been able to implement a very state-of-the-art platform with WSO2’s software, we know it works, and we’re going to exploit that as we continue to innovate.”

“Barcelona Digital Technology Centre is at the forefront in delivering solutions that significantly improve the quality of life by taking advantage of technologies—including the Internet of Things, cloud and APIs—that connect people, processes and information,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder and CEO. “We are thrilled by BDigital’s success in using our WSO2 Carbon platform to deliver eKauri. It highlights the value of using a modular, open source, open standards approach to harness the many technologies that are enabling today’s connected world.”
