SAN CARLOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF), in collaboration with Open Health Network (OHN), today announced the launch of Lung Cancer Foundation, the first of its kind mobile application designed to empower lung cancer patients and their families. The free app includes the ALCF’s patient handbook, information on Community Hospital Centers of Excellence, a glossary of lung cancer terms and information for patients and their caregivers to use during diagnosis, care and treatment. The app helps track data and connects patients to clinical trials and genomic testing.
“A cancer journey is scary, overwhelming, confusing and for lung cancer patients, it’s even more difficult because there’s not a lot of information available,” said Bonnie J. Addario, stage 3B lung cancer survivor and ALCF founder. “We created this app to close the gaps of information because we believe the more knowledge patients have, the better equipped they and their family will be to deal with lung cancer and become survivors.”
The ALCF’s Lung Cancer Foundation is a patient-centric app that puts knowledge and power into the hands of lung cancer patients, answers questions on care and treatment options, tracks a patient’s personal diagnostic journey and provides access to a support network. In 2015, the app will also link to the ALCF’s online patient portal to track data and connect patients to clinical trials and genomic testing.
“The collaboration between the ALCF and OHN is the first step in unlocking a wealth of self-reporting data that’s missing from current medical research and disease management efforts,” said Tatyana Kanzaveli, founder of OHN. “Information is our best weapon in the fight for lung cancer patients. We are committed to enabling clinical trials, patient engagement, surveys, data tracking and analytics to support advances in research and treatment options.”
Lung Cancer Foundation key features include:
- Handbook: This educational resource provides comprehensive, up-to-date and accurate information for patients and their caregivers, regardless of where they are in their cancer journey.
- Videos: Access a library of videos from the ALCF’s Living Room speakers series, presentations by lung cancer specialists, physicians and researchers covering early detection, treatment options, molecular and genetic testing, clinical trials, drug discoveries, personalized medicine, nutrition, surgical equipment and procedures and up-to-date news about advancements.
- Treatment Centers: App users can find a list of hospitals that have received the ALCF’s “Center of Excellence” seal for providing exemplary care for lung cancer patients.
- Glossary: Find the definitions to all the new medical terms used in the cancer community.
“No two patients are alike, nor should they be treated the same. The Lung Cancer Foundation app helps patients navigate their individual disease and empowers patients to determine what treatment options are best for their specific cancer mutation,” said Addario.
Lung Cancer Foundation is available now on iTunes and Google Play.
