Walmart Statement on 2014 Early Black Friday Results

BENTONVILLE, Ark.--()--Statement attributable to Laura Phillips, senior vice president of merchandising, Walmart U.S.:

“Last night was awesome! In a few short hours, we flipped from being the largest grocery store in town to the best gift shop on the block. Not only did we have millions of customers shopping our stores, but we’re confident Walmart was the first stop of the night for most of them. We saw lines for tablets and TVs snaking throughout the stores, and with our exclusive 1-Hour Guarantee, customers left happy.

“Our customers came with a plan to win. More than 25 million people downloaded our Black Friday ad, and 20 million customers used their local store maps on Walmart.com. Online shopping started while turkeys were still in the oven and yesterday was our second-highest online sales day ever – topped only by Cyber Monday last year.

“Tablets, TVs, sheets, children’s apparel, and video gaming were the top five categories of the night in our stores. As expected, Disney Frozen Snow Glow Elsa dolls were one of the top toys of the night. We sold enough food storage containers to hold 4.5 million pounds of Thanksgiving leftovers and we sold enough towels to line the banks of the Mississippi River. Video games, wireless pre-paid phones, HDTVs and baby items were popular on Walmart.com on Thanksgiving Day.

“All of this was because of our associates. Throughout the day, we welcomed more than 22 million customers to our stores – that’s more than the number of people who visit Disneyland in an entire year – and our associates served them with pride. During our big events, our cashiers had nearly every register open. And once again, we delivered safer, exciting events for our customers.

“Our Black Friday weekend continues today at 6 a.m. and all weekend long with TVs, wireless, jewelry, tires, Christmas décor and thousands of other items at amazing prices in our stores and online – all leading up to our biggest Cyber Monday event ever.”
