Afilias Endorses the NETmundial Initiative

Distributed Internet Governance Encourages Accountability, Innovation, and Market Success

DUBLIN--()--Global registry services provider Afilias today announced its endorsement of the NETmundial Initiative on Internet governance cooperation. This initiative provides a venue for the global Internet community to discuss and collaboratively address a range of emerging policy challenges related to the Internet. The outcomes of this initiative will improve the existing Internet governance framework.

“Afilias fully supports the NETmundial Initiative,” said Ram Mohan, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer of Afilias. “As the Internet continues to transform societies and empower people, its dynamic nature requires an agile governance model. The NETmundial Initiative is key to developing an effective and distributed Internet governance system, conducted in an open, collaborative, bottom-up process, involving all sectors of society – industry, technical bodies, government, academia and civil society. Distributed Internet governance encourages accountability, advances the public interest, and empowers innovation among talented people everywhere in the world.”

Afilias supports the modern paradigm for standards where the economics of global markets, fueled by technological advancements, drive global deployment of standards regardless of their formal status.

In this paradigm, standards support interoperability, foster global competition, are developed through an open participatory process, and are voluntarily adopted globally. These voluntary standards serve as the building blocks for developing products and services that meet the needs of the market and the consumer, thereby driving innovation. Innovation, in turn, contributes to the creation of new markets and the growth and expansion of existing markets.
