MENLO PARK, Calif.--()--GuideSpark, the leader in employee communications and engagement, released results from a study today giving HR leaders a glimpse into how today’s corporate workforce perceives the performance management process.

The GuideSpark study shows that the general consensus amongst employees is that performance reviews are a waste of time, with more than 60% of employees not understanding how their performance is measured relative to their peers.

There is also confusion around how a company’s performance rating ties to compensation. Given this, it’s no surprise that 75% say that performance reviews don’t always lead to better performance.

Managers find performance reviews to take a lot of time, and almost half don’t feel empowered to make performance and compensation decisions on their own. The research also discloses a big gap in manager training around handling compensation conversations with direct reports.

The results of the research also throw light on the fact that a majority of employees find their company’s goal setting process to not help them prioritize their work.

“Companies are investing a lot in their employees, and yet there is still a gap in employees understanding the value of their programs,” says Keith Kitani, CEO GuideSpark. “Given this, companies have an opportunity to educate their workforce and promote a stronger pay-for-performance culture.”

The findings are based on a GuideSpark survey of 325 full-time employees across all industries, conducted in September 2014. The majority (81%) work for enterprises with greater than 2,500 employees.
