NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Balfour Beatty Communities, LLC, a leading provider of property management, development and related real estate services for the multifamily, military, and student housing markets, was recently honored with several notable sustainability awards recognizing the collective efforts of the company as well as individual employees.
Balfour Beatty Communities was selected by the Green Organization for two 2014 Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment. One award recognized the company’s green/energy efficient building efforts at Fort Bliss in Texas where they are building new military family housing which will have the National Green Building Standard’s (NGBS) ‘Emerald’ certification. A second award recognized Balfour Beatty Communities’ Renovation & Construction division and their efforts to divert demolition and construction waste from landfills. In 2013, the successful program resulted in more than 70% of the company’s project waste—62 million pounds—being recycled or reused rather than heading to a landfill.
The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) also recognized Balfour Beatty Communities as a 2014 Renewable Energy Project of the Year recipient for its solar project at Fort Bliss where more than 13 megawatts of rooftop solar energy systems are being installed across military family housing at the Army installation. The solar project will offset more than 30% of the energy needs in family housing, making it the largest solar-powered military community in the world. The AEE also honored Balfour Beatty Communities’ Jeff Downing, project manager with the Renovation & Construction team, with a 2014 Renewable Energy Innovator of the Year award for his work to install solar lighting across more than two miles of recreational trails at both Whiteman AFB in Missouri and Malmstrom AFB in Montana.
Most recently, Hayley King, sustainability coordinator for Balfour Beatty Communities, was selected by Home Innovation Research Labs as a 2014 NGBS Green Partner of Excellence. The award recognizes her contributions to NGBS as well as her efforts to advance green building and third-party certification of high-performance homes within the Balfour Beatty Communities portfolio.
“From small efforts to major initiatives, the Balfour Beatty Communities team is continually striving to operate our business in the most environmentally responsible and sustainable manner,” said Tabitha Crawford, SVP of sustainability and innovation for Balfour Beatty Communities. “With these awards, we are very proud to be named among the most innovative leaders in residential building and property management.”
Balfour Beatty Communities’ sustainability platform includes four pillars: healthy communities, environmental limits, profitable markets and innovation. The platform specifies roles, responsibilities and best practices to be carried out across all levels of the company in order to meet stringent standards that are verified through a third-party audit process.
