MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Exelis Action Corps, the corporate volunteer service program of defense and aerospace company Exelis, global talent consultancy Korn Ferry, and nonprofit organization Points of Light today announced they are seeking applicants for the second session of their groundbreaking talent development program to help recent military veterans become top civilian leaders.
The Leveraging Military Leadership Program (LMLP), initiated last year, utilizes executive coaches and talent management experts from Korn Ferry and Exelis to help transitioning veterans translate their leadership skills to the civilian sector. Participants in the first session of the program completed their onsite instruction and coaching in January.
Applications for the next group of veterans will be accepted through April 11 and can be accessed here. Veterans of any rank from all branches of the military who have left service within the last two years, or will be transitioning in the next six months, are eligible to participate in the free, four-month program. The LMLP kicks off with an onsite session in the Washington D.C. metro area, June 20 - 22. Participants for the program will be selected and notified by May 5. Additional program information is available here.
“This program is all about helping veterans apply their leadership in new environments,” said Exelis Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer Erica Jeffries. “We have had the privilege of coaching some amazingly talented people who have already made considerable sacrifices for their country. If our inaugural session in January is any indication of the sessions to follow, participants will be able to engage in a valuable professional experience focused entirely on accelerating their successful career transition.”
The feedback from the program’s first session was extremely positive. A Marine who recently retired said, “To the entire Korn/Ferry and Exelis team - deepest thanks for your commitment to veterans and for hosting the most effective transition/professional development seminar I have ever attended. You are making a difference.”
“We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their service,” said Bernadine Karunaratne, president, U.S. Government Consulting Services, Korn Ferry. “This program was designed to help veterans strengthen their personal, interpersonal and executive communication skills and develop a focused career strategy for the private sector. We believe the outcome will be positive not only for the participants but also their employers and the economy as a whole.”
Background on the program
The transformational LMLP program is designed to help veterans strengthen their personal, interpersonal and executive communication skills and develop a clear career strategy. In the career-development sessions, veterans chart their professional journey, learn how to apply their leadership skills in civilian positions, and clearly articulate their differentiated value proposition.
The Leveraging Military Leadership Program was initiated during an Exelis leadership development program, designed and led by Korn Ferry. While participating in the program, Jeffries was planning a project to set veterans up for success as they depart military service, and Korn Ferry was eager to extend its reach to serve veterans and their families. It was clear that a partnership between Korn Ferry, Exelis Action Corps and Points of Light would provide veterans the rare opportunity to experience world-class civilian leadership training. Jeffries, a former White House fellow and Army helicopter pilot, spearheaded the program planning.
The Leveraging Military Leadership Program, which began in January, will convene multiple times a year and will be held in various sites across the country. Program organizers will target geographical areas with a strong military and veteran presence.
