BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Chanler Group, an environmental law firm based in Berkeley, CA, announced today the outcome of its 2014 grant program, awarding $25,000 to the Center for Creative Land Recycling, Alliance for the Great Lakes and Sea Research Foundation. These organizations will use the grants to clean up the environment, educate consumers and build research and development facilities as further described below.
“We all have the same goal: a cleaner environment,” said Josh Voorhees, managing attorney of The Chanler Group. “We are proud to partner with these worthy organizations to enhance and improve the health and safety of our planet and its people.”
The Center for Creative Land Recycling redevelops areas degraded by soil and groundwater contamination, and intends to use its $12,500 grant to clean up Miraflores, a 14-acre site in Richmond, California, that has been contaminated by pesticides, lead, and asbestos. CCLR will preserve existing historic structures and develop parks, open spaces and affordable senior apartments in Miraflores.
The Alliance for the Great Lakes received $7,500 to increase consumer awareness regarding microbeads, a byproduct of facial cleaners and exfoliants, which are contaminating the Great Lakes. After informing consumers about the environmental hazard, Alliance will work with local residents and corporations to eliminate microbeads from the Great Lakes.
The Sea Research Foundation is in the process of building a research and education center at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut and will put its $5,000 grant toward constructing a laboratory and classrooms for children.
For this grant cycle, The Chanler Group prioritized organizations around its offices in Berkeley, Chicago, and New Canaan. The firm plans to broaden its range in subsequent grant cycles.
