SCAN Health Plan Medical Director Romilla Batra, M.D., Addresses Medicare Congress on Improving Care Through Proactive Engagement

LONG BEACH, Calif.--()--Romilla Batra, M.D., corporate medical director of SCAN Health Plan, was one of the featured speakers at the Medicare Congress 2014 meeting held earlier this month in New Orleans. Attended by healthcare executives and government officials from throughout the country, the conference focused on “driving the next generation of healthcare through improved clinical care management and customer centricity.”

In keeping with that theme, Dr. Batra addressed the distinguished audience on how proactively engaging Medicare Advantage members in preventive care can improve quality outcomes. Specifically, Dr. Batra cited SCAN’s “Buddy” program (based on the care-navigator concept) and “Health Check Records” (customized cards mailed to members to update them about preventive care opportunities) as examples of wellness initiatives that are making an important and measureable difference. Her presentation also discussed how appropriate interventions such as these and others can improve the overall health of defined populations.

Dr. Batra brought to her presentation extensive, hands-on experience in leading organizational efforts focused on chronic disease management and quality improvement, both on the health plan and provider group sides. In her role at SCAN, Dr. Batra sets clinical policies and procedures, provides physician oversight of select clinical programs, and helps design clinical initiatives to improve quality of care and drive star performance.

The 11th annual meeting of the Medicare Congress focused on the “tectonic shifts” taking place in healthcare and the key areas that are of growing importance as the industry looks to provide higher quality, cost-efficient care to members. In addition to Dr. Batra’s presentation, other topics covered included serving a dual-eligible population, improving star ratings, networking with ACOs, understanding the keys of clinical care, and implementing a customer-centric model.
