Soon-to-Open Algonquin Resort Plays Cupid for Montreal Man's Surprise Valentine's Day Proposal

ST. ANDREWS BY THE SEA, New Brunswick--()--The Algonquin Resort, soon to be the first Canadian hotel to join Marriott’s Autograph Collection, last night lent its signature knack for creative surprises to a man's wedding proposal.

Daniel Shereck of Montreal, Quebec, and Brianna Tofin, from Outlook, Saskatchewan, recently relocated to New Brunswick and were planning a visit to Saint Andrews to hunt for a wedding venue, even though Shereck had yet to propose. Local wedding planner, Katelyn Rodas, owner of K Bella Weddings and Events, alerted the hotel that the couple would be in town, and a plan was hatched.

"A man only proposes once, and I wanted to make it memorable" said Shereck. "The staff at the Algonquin jumped on the chance to help create a plan that was romantic, clever and just a little over the top."

The hotel is not yet open, so giving Tofin the sense that other guests were there to enjoy a Valentine's Day package required enlisting the help of staff and others from the community to mill about as if the hotel were occupied. During the check-in process, the couple was guided to their suite where they were to enjoy an intimate, Valentine's dinner by the fireplace. The hotel then invited the couple to enjoy a warm beverage outside by the fire pit - and that's when the real surprise started. Shereck proposed under a beautiful New Brunswick sky, with romantic background music played by local artist Chambers McLean www.chambersmclean.com.

"They opened this landmark hotel, prepared a romantic, gourmet meal when the restaurant wasn't open, hired musicians and fired up their outdoor space just for our special moment," said Shereck. "We'll never forget it."

"An autograph is unique to the individual, and we're setting a standard for experiences that are similarly memorable and personal for our guests," said Tim Ostrem, general manager of the Algonquin Resort. "Hopefully, they'll choose our hotel to be a part of their wedding, too. Just imagine what we can do with a little advanced planning."

The hotel also arranged to capture the event for posterity with the help of local TV station CHCO. Please go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ9SDZB_1os.

The Algonquin Resort is nearing completion of a $35 million restoration and will officially open in the coming weeks as part of Marriott's Autograph Collection.
