SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Catheter Connections, Inc., a leading developer of medical devices for the prevention of blood stream infections caused by IVs, today announced that it entered into an exclusive license agreement with Excelsior Medical Corporation (Excelsior). Excelsior, a privately held medical device company, manufactures and sells SwabCap® disinfection caps and SwabFlush® pre-filled flush syringes with disinfecting caps for the disinfection and protection of IV needleless connectors. Catheter Connections manufactures and sells the comprehensive DualCap System™, which includes caps that disinfect and protect both sides of the IV line — the needleless connector and the IV tubing male luer.
The license agreement follows the recent issuance of US Patent Number 8,647,326 to Catheter Connections. It covers the technology for an innovative and easy-to-use strip designed to hang from the IV pole at the patient’s bedside. This strip can deliver IV disinfection caps, like DualCap® or SwabCap®, to the nurse when required so that there is no need to leave the patient to get caps from the supply room. This innovative technology is designed to improve compliance with disinfection protocols because the caps are conveniently and easily available to nurses at the point of patient care.
Guy J. Jordan, Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Catheter Connections, said, “This agreement further validates our intellectual property leadership position in IV disinfection and protection. Catheter Connections’ DualCap® technology already helps to save lives by reducing the risk of IV catheter related blood stream infections, and we continue to develop our IP portfolio to increase patient safety further.”
