SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Docker, Inc., the commercial entity behind the open source Docker project, today announced that Baidu, the leading Chinese language Internet search provider, is using Docker in production. The Baidu Application Engine (BAE) PaaS platform for developers is now based on Docker, providing lightweight virtualization and containerization.
“With traditional PaaS, resource isolation and constraints are achieved through sandbox technology,” said Yifei Chen, tech leader of the BAE team at Baidu. “We were drawn to Docker because it replaces sandboxing with containerization, enabling a multi-lingual, agile and cost-effective solution that provides our developers with the flexibility needed to support a growing number of frameworks and applications. Docker has a thriving ecosystem, and we are happy to officially join it.”
Baidu sought a solution that would enhance its BAE PaaS platform after experiencing the limitations of sandboxing, in addition to the significant expenses tied to development, maintenance and application migration. To address the issues with BAE 2.0, a sandbox-based PaaS, Baidu began evaluating container technology as a possible solution. After researching various solutions, Baidu determined that Docker delivered the necessary features by providing enhanced functionality, incremental image capabilities, and easy-to-read code, while also enabling VMs to be created and deleted quickly. Docker enabled Baidu developers to package, ship and run any application as lightweight containers in almost any Linux environment – bare metal, virtualized, public or private cloud – without delay or overhead.

Baidu further engaged with the Docker community by making contributions to the Docker repository. The company also recently presented on their use of Docker during the Cloud Computing Architect Summit in China.
