CopperEgg Debuts Real User Monitoring (RUM) for Cloud-Based Applications

APM Solution is Purpose-Built for Elastic, Burstable Environments; Provides End-to-End Monitoring Across Servers, Websites, Applications and Real User Experience

AWS re:Invent 2013

AUSTIN, Texas--()--As businesses move more high-value applications to the cloud, application performance monitoring (APM) is now a critical tool in IT’s ability to ensure application delivery and uptime across highly diverse, dynamic, distributed environments.

Today, CopperEgg announced its entry into the APM market with the latest release of its end-to-end cloud performance monitoring solution, now including Real User Monitoring (RUM). The solution provides complete visibility across servers, websites, applications and end users, whether in public, private or hybrid cloud environments.

A recent CopperEgg survey of 150 IT professionals found the majority of respondents monitor 25 percent or less of their applications, citing cost (31 percent), complexity (31 percent) and time involved (30 percent) as the top three challenges in diagnosing end-to-end application performance issues. Unfortunately, existing APM tools are too technical, invasive and expensive to deploy widely in production-centric environments. Fifty percent of respondents regard their current monitoring tools as no better than “fair” in providing effective application diagnostics.

CopperEgg’s RUM solution monitors, troubleshoots and optimizes applications in the cloud, connecting the dots between real user experience and infrastructure behavior. The solution is purpose-built for elastic, burstable cloud environments including Amazon, Rackspace, Windows Azure, and many others. Designed, packaged and priced for production, it allows enterprises to quickly and economically scale their architecture up or down to meet evolving business needs.

Key features include:

  • Unified dashboard -- provides one-stop monitoring and service level correlation customizable by role or user
  • Ops-centric design -- supports production-wide deployment and operations use cases
  • End-to-end stack -- provides holistic view across servers, websites, applications and users
  • Hybrid cloud coverage -- reduces management siloes across public, private and on-premises environments
  • Deep forensics and real-time analysis -- pinpoint problem areas and alert to potential issues in two clicks or less
  • Broad RUM transaction types, tuning and alerting -- includes AJAX monitoring, APDEX configurability and granular alerting and reporting on response times across geographies and browsers
  • Elastic, self-adapting architecture -- modifies automatically in response to operating environment changes
  • Third-party integration -- leverages existing tools including Chef, Puppet and GitHub

In addition, CopperEgg’s SaaS delivery model eliminates capital expenses with affordable, pay-as-you-go pricing that provides zero admin installation and configuration, and supports widespread deployment across production applications.

“CopperEgg gives us the situational awareness we need for our DevOps team to fully monitor our production environment,” said Boyd Hemphill, Director of DevOps at W2O Group. “Our previous APM tools were too expensive and lacked the depth to cover all our machines across both AWS and Rackspace. CopperEgg delivers focused monitoring and beautiful simplicity all at the right price. With the addition of Real User Monitoring, we’ve been able to extend our visibility to include end user experience and catch more problems before they affect our customers.”

With more than 650 customers including Alcatel-Lucent, SmugMug, The Climate Corporation, Couchsurfing, Thomson Reuters, Mass Relevance, The Economist, FeedMagnet and others, CopperEgg processes more than 100 billion records a day while delivering real-time performance monitoring. The company, which was acquired by Idera in July, plans to leverage Idera’s deep expertise in application performance management to expand its APM footprint across a broad range of applications and platforms.

“In the cloud, if your applications are down, your business is down – and everyone knows it. The worst thing you can do is have your customers as the first line of defense,” said Josh Stephens, vice president of product strategy at CopperEgg. “From the C-suite to the DevOps team, CopperEgg gives organizations complete visibility into the health of cloud applications, eliminating costly guesswork and downtime and enabling more strategic activities.”

Pricing and Availability

The CopperEgg RUM solution is available in public beta immediately, with a starter package priced at $70 for 10 servers. General availability begins Dec. 1, 2013, and includes a free 14-day trial.
