BACKGROUND:

Saturday’s event marks the second boat-building session for Metropolitan’s 12th annual Solar Cup program. A group of 18 teams built their boats last Saturday (Nov. 2). Solar Cup concludes with three days of racing May 16-18, 2014 at Lake Skinner near Temecula in southwest Riverside County. Students from 48 high schools in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties are participating in the 2013-14 event.

Solar Cup, which began in 2002 with just eight teams and about 80 students, has become the nation’s largest solar-powered boat competition. Along the way, about 9,000 students have participated in Solar Cup competitions, which allow students to apply their skills in math, physics, engineering and communications, while learning about Southern California’s water sources, resource management and alternative energy development.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving nearly 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its members to develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
