MALIBU, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon treatment center, recognized by many as one of the top inpatient rehabs in California, and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California, is issuing a stern public warning today to treatment professionals, families, and communities at-large about a new dangerous trend in the Marijuana community called “Dabbing.” According to a recent article, Dabbing is a major point of concern for marijuana advocates and opponents alike. Referred to as “the crack of pot,” Dabbing is the consumption of Butane Hash Oil (BHO), which is an extremely potent marijuana concentrate that can exceed 80% THC content. Also known as dabs, honey oil, wax, shadder, or budder, one of the methods for extracting the BHO involves packing a stainless steel tube with marijuana and "blasting" the tube with butane (an extraction solvent), which yields the potent concentrate and according to FEMA, can result in explosions.
One of the world’s foremost addiction experts and treatment pioneers, Dr. Mohammad said, “We are at a critical juncture of the Marijuana debate and while there are pros and cons for both sides, consumption trends like Dabbing are indicative of something even the Marijuana supporters recognize is potentially hazardous to users’ health and the legalization movement in general.” Mohammad added, “Not only is the process of extracting the BHO potentially lethal, but also the user needs to be aware of the fact that the concentrate will also contain concentrated levels of any contaminants or pesticides the marijuana may have been exposed to; and let’s not forget that inhaling impure butane is also potentially toxic. This process also creates such a potent concentrate with astronomical THC levels, that we can count on a surge in cannabis overdoses as the practice gains traction; we need to raise awareness now.”
Dr. Mohammad’s public warning is designed to inform users, communities, and addiction experts about what they’re up against. Mohammad added, “It is more important than ever that the medical community stay on top of the emerging trends like Dabbing and do everything in our power to raise awareness. We cannot stop the potentially harmful trends, but we can certainly keep people informed and educated.”
